How did you get started teaching?
Wanting to convey our knowledge and help build the community of responsible gun owners, each of our staff has a sincere interest and passion for teaching, each of them entering into the trainjng field at different times of their lives and careers.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Shop around. Attend a class or two with different Instructors until you find a style and method you like.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask the Instructor about their background.
Verify the Instructor's credentials.
Shop around! When talking to other Instructors/training providers, ask about their competitors. A great Instructor will not bash their competitors - and if they do, they should have reasons to back it up; if they don't, take what they say with a grain of salt, and decide if you really want to learn with that person.
Military or Law Enforcement backgrounds don't always make a great Instructor. They probably have a lot of relevant experience, but if they aren't able to appropriately pass on that information and teach others about. Many top-notch firearms instructors are your average citizen that have been around firearms - and learning, training, and practicing their craft for many years. Threat Scenarios has a good balance of staff from all of these diverse backgrounds, with several common traits - the desire to teach; the ability to pass on their knowledge in a personable, professional manner while checking their ego at the door; and their desire to help you become safe, competent, and confident in firearms handling and shooting.
