About

I’ve been playing music for most of my life and I’ve been teaching music full time since 2005. I have several music degrees including a Masters in Guitar Performance. I love teaching the guitar and I think I do a great job of passing my enthusiasm as well as my knowledge to my students.

Lesson plans are built around each students tendencies and taste. I guarantee you’ll have a blast learning to play. We’ll work hard, but we get to grow our music brains! Fun!

I love teaching music. I mean I love it. Like crazy. Playing music is my favorite thing to do and I really enjoy fostering that enjoyment in other people, while helping to expand their horizons. It's not always easy but it is always fulfilling.

I have a lot of teaching experience and I’ve taught so many different people. Everyone is unique, so I pride myself in my flexible approach when it comes to each student. One of my favorite things is presenting material to each student as an individual with a custom approach for each.

I highly recommend James! I searched for instructors for a while (some too creepy, some too stiff), and Im so glad I got connected with James. Hes the best, I just know it. Hes safe, respectful, fun, communicates quickly, and is very intelligent about the guitar. I had never played acoustic guitar or learned how to read music before, and wanted an instructor who would introduce me to the instrument, teach me basics, show how to play like my favorite artists, and above all, make it enjoyable. I was able to take about 5 hours of in-studio lessons (masked and distanced) with James and in less a month, I learned basic posture, basic vocabulary, how to tune, sight reading, multiple formats for reading music, what to google to find song notes for free, how to play chords, how to strum, to duet, and how to play some songs both in the traditional music books and from popular music. Hes so great at teaching because hes very knowledgeable, adjustable, and he makes it fun without wasting time. Plus he personalizes the lessons! He asked for a list of the kind of music I like and before I even realized it, I was playing chords of my favorite songs... nothing really feels cooler than that. I am now hearing the guitar in songs because of the lessons! I have to move out of Denver but will continue to take virtual lessons with James.

He didnt try to impress me with his skills and abilities, but he focused on what I was capable of, and what I want to accomplish, and is structuring a set of lessons around that. Very patient. After just few minutes watching my poor techniques, he made suggestions that corrected those and explained why. It just made sense.

Frequently asked questions

All of my students eventually find their own path, but everyone begins at the basics. I introduce students to the fundamentals of music through the instrument of their choice. Once the student demonstrates an interest in a direction I will shape the lesson times to cater to their interest while maintaining the general core of a solid music education.

I have a Master of Music in Guitar Performance and Bachelors of Music in Guitar Performance and Music Composition. I've been teaching music full time since 2005. I've played in a variety of settings; from rock bands to classical ensembles. I've jammed on the banjo, the bass, and a guitar made of ice.

Lessons are $30 per half hour lesson.

I began teaching straight out of University, in the back of a local music store.

I've worked with students of all ages and persuasion; kids as young as 5 and adults in their 90's. I've worked with special needs children and quite a few fussy adults as well.

I have small victories with students constantly. I would be hard-pressed to find just one. One of favorite things is the aha moment that is inevitable whenever we start talking about technique or theory. And I really love when younger students work independently.

Find a teacher who can be a mentor. Someone who is going to dig deep with you on the instrument. Find a true expert who is a lifer and a professional. Students should be learning Music (capital M) with as well as their chosen instrument.

It's helpful (not necessary, but helpful) to figure out what your goals are, and find some specific things that you would like to learn. A good teacher will have a structured path for students, but they will be able to include your goals and interests on that path as well.
