Arvada Guitar Instruction

Travis Chastain · Arvada, CO

Featured Instructor

Travis Chastain is a guitar teacher giving guitar lessons in Arvada, Colorado, and we had a chance to talk via Skype with Travis about the climate of guitar lessons in Arvadaand how he approaches teaching his guitar students in teaching them how to play guitar. Check out the transcript of the interview below, or go to Travis’s guitar teacher page to watch it.

Arvada Guitar Teacher Travis Chastain We’re here today with Travis Chastain, who is a guitar teacher on Welcome, Travis, it’s great to have you here today, and thanks for taking the time to talk to us about your guitar teaching.

Travis Chastain: Thanks for having me, James. My pleasure. Well, let’s start off with where you teach guitar. What state do you teach in and which city within that state?

Travis Chastain: I teach in Denver, Colorado. And, do you teach in guitar students’ homes or do they come to you?

Travis Chastain: I have a little bit of both. I have about 40% of my students that I go to and about 60% that come to my studio. And, when you travel, do you travel mainly within the Metropolitan Denver area or do you travel outside of that too?

Travis Chastain: I typically travel within the Denver Metro area. Highlands Ranch, I believe, is in the Denver Metro area, so no more than a ten, fifteen minute radius from where I live. It’s a good idea to have a good clear radius. That helps you out with your scheduling, I’m sure.

Travis Chastain: Oh, absolutely. Well, I wanted to ask you, what’s the guitar lesson climate there in Denver, Colorado. Do you find a lot of people want to learn guitar, and what styles are guitar students most interested in learning?

Travis Chastain: Well, yeah, there’s a very good climate for guitar and learning guitar in Denver, Colorado. In my experience, a lot of people want to learn acoustic guitar. I have a lot of people who also want to learn classical guitar, ironically. Yeah so … but there’s also a good electric guitar climate here, as well. And so, do you teach all three? Do you teach classical guitar plus acoustic and electric as well?

Travis Chastain: I don’t teach electric (guitar) – no. I don’t have any experience with that. My speciality is classical guitar, and I do teach a little bit acoustic. Okay … so your main focus is on classical guitar lessons?

Exactly. And, in simple terms, how would you describe your guitar teaching approach. When you’re with a student, what is your focus with an individual guitar student?

Travis Chastain: Well, my main focus is to make music and music learning the most enjoyable thing possible and, in my experience, learning guitar isn’t an easy process. It doesn’t feel easy. It doesn’t … you know, the ease of action is not there. You know, guitar can be very difficult; it can be very challenging, and, therefore, the joy can leave – the music making process can kind of go away. My main approach is to make guitar playing easy … and physically easy … fluid, and the mental and physical approach is needed to do those things. That sounds wonderful, Travis. And, do you teach guitar to both adults and children?

Travis Chastain: Yes I do. I have two kids three-and-a-half, at the moment, and I have guitar students as old as seventy. So, I go all over the range. So really, you have two students now, who are three-and-a-half-years-old?

Travis Chastain: Yeah, yeah, that’s quite a challenge, but they’re fun! That’s great … it’s wonderful to hear. And can you tell us a little bit about your guitar lesson fees and your scheduling format? How often to you work with students?

Travis Chastain: Well, I have a little bit of flexibility, but I typically recommend doing one (guitar lesson) a week. I teach thirty minute lessons, forty-five minute lessons, sixty minute guitar lessons for people, depending on what they need. And, my guitar lesson fees are $30 for a half-hour, $40 for a forty-five minute, and $50 for a sixty minute guitar lesson. Excellent! And, when you teach-you mentioned that you teach acoustic guitar and classical guitar- what kind of guitars do you use in your guitar teaching?

Travis Chastain: I use my classical typically. Yes, and is there a typical brand that you use for the classical and for the acoustic? … Just for prospective guitar students to know about the types of guitars you have … the brands of guitar. What do you have?

Travis Chastain: Well, I have three classical guitars with me here, and I have a Paulino Bernabe – he’s a Spanish luthier, who just recently … (Skype cuts out for a second or two). And, then I have an Australian luthier … Richard Price guitar. And those are my two main babies … those are my girls. Yes, and when you’re teaching guitar, do you ever employ recording equipment? Do you ever show your guitar students how to record themselves playing the classical or acoustic guitars?

Travis Chastain: Oh, absolutely, yes! I think it’s a very valuable thing for people to, you know, hear back what they sound like. It helps them improve, but it also gives them a little more value in the guitar lessons, so they can play back some of the things we went over. And, do you offer guidance to your students about what kind of guitars to buy, if they’re looking to buy a guitar?

Travis Chastain: Oh, absolutely, yeah. I recommend guitars to them, you know, depending on the person, what their aspirations are. I typically recommend a classical guitar for kids to learn guitar on. The strings are nylon, so, therefore, it doesn’t take as much energy and effort in the left hand, in particular to get the … For my style, promoting ease, I typically recommend classical because it’s easier to learn on. Makes sense. Especially when you’re beginning, the nylon strings can be a lot easier on the fingers, and that can often be something that can push a guitar student away – the difficulty of pushing down the strings.

Travis Chastain: Certainly. Absolutely. And, before we sign off – I don’t know if you have a guitar around – would you like to play anything for us? If not, that would be great; if not, we’ll end the interview here.

Travis Chastain: Well certainly. I will improv a little bit for you, and I’ll show you my guitar here … one second (Travis gets up to get his guitar, and returns). Okay. Now, which of the two girls would this be?

Travis Chastain: This is the Price guitar that I was telling you about. Yes, and that is Australian?

Travis Chastain: Yes, it’s an Australian luthier. Okay. Great.

(Editor’s note: Here Travis plays a resonant and melodic classical guitar improvisation. To hear Travis’s guitar playing, please visit the Travis Chastain guitar teacher page.)

Upon Travis completing his playing … That’s beautiful, Travis. Thank you for playing that, and I want to thank you very much for being part of this interview. It’s been wonderful talking with you about your guitar teaching.

Travis Chastain: Well, thank you so much for having me, James, and hope you have a great day. I hope you do the same, Travis, and take care. Good luck to you.

Travis Chastain: Thank you so much. Bye bye.

FindaGuitarTeacher: Bye bye.
