Berg, self-taught, specializes in oil paintings that conclude figurative work, hyper-realistic portraiture, abstract dimensions, landscapes, and your occasional cat or banana flag. This interdisciplinary approach allowed her to create layered, textured pieces that invite viewers to engage with them on multiple levels. With a wealth of detail and brilliant characterization, she depicts the profligate and inane existence of colorful youthful activity. Berg invented a sort of visual shorthand that enabled her to recall with perfect clarity whatever sight she wished to retain. She became, by this means, an enormously learned artist possessing a p

Your Painting Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do painting classes cost?

Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.

Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.

How long are painting classes?

Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.

What kind of painting class is best for beginners?

Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.

Where can I take painting classes?

You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.

What do I bring to painting classes?

Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Easel
  • Canvas
  • Apron

  • Avoid making large payments up front.

What questions should I ask painting instructors?

When looking for local painting classes, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been painting?
  • Do you allow walk-ins?
  • What type of paint would you recommend for my experience level?
  • What's your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have an age requirement?
  • How long are your classes?
  • Can I take my work home after class, or does it need to stay here to dry?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

If you have the opportunity to take a painting lesson from Amelia, do it! First of all I love the way in which Amelia teaches. This way of painting is so natural, where nothing is contrived and it allows me to really express and create without my mind getting in the way. I learned a lot of basic, unique and advanced painting techniques that I will have for life and I think this is so valuable. I enjoy how creative this process is. I am being guided by Amelia and can ask questions whenever but I am the one creating the piece, instead of the usual painting class where you copy what the artist has already made.

Having avoided painting faces forever, I was apprehensive when I learned that was our project. Over the two days with Homa's excellent talent for instruction and her positive coaching I accomplished what I thought was impossible! Now my "Wisdom Woman" portrait shines in my studio. Homa's spiritual approach helps you find your visual inspiration. It was a powerful two days!

I was surprised at how much I loved my experience with Paint and Heal. I went so I could spend some time with an old friend. I've never been able to paint anything and I honestly wasn't looking forward to that because I didn't think I could. I absolutely love my painting and I'm in awe every time I look at it! I can't believe I painted it and it feels so good to realize I'm capable of creating something so beautiful! It was a wonderful experience that I'd love to do again. I highly recommend it to anyone!
