ISR swim lessons

ISR swim lessons cost $100 to $175 per week, depending on your location, and instructors typically require you to commit to 6 weeks of lessons. Most instructors charge a deposit to reserve your child's spot and apply the deposit toward the first 1 or 2 weeks of lessons.

ISR National Registration Fee

The ISR National Registration Fee is $105 for new students and $40 for returning students. This non-refundable fee covers a review of your child's medical and developmental history by ISR's Registration and Evaluation Team (RET), which determines if there are any potential health issues that could affect your child's safety.

The registration fee includes a digital copy of the ISR Parent Resource Guide and a coupon code for $15 off your next purchase of swim diapers, towels, or other items from www.isrstore.com.

Additional costs

ISR requires all children who are not potty-trained to wear two layers of reusable cloth swim diapers for each lesson. Disposable swim diapers are not allowed. Most parents recommend purchasing at least four swim diapers, which cost $10 each at the ISR store. You'll also need to bring three towels to each lesson.

What are ISR swim lessons?

ISR teaches survival swimming, helping children gain confidence in the water and learn how to respond calmly to aquatic incidents. The instructor conducts lessons one-on-one and tailors the lessons specifically for each child.

  • Babies from 6 to 12 months learn how to correctly hold their breath underwater and how to roll onto their back and float unassisted until rescued.

  • Children who can walk independently learn ISR's swim-float-swim sequence—how to hold their breath underwater, swim face down with their eyes open and roll onto their back to float and rest as needed, repeating this method until they reach the side of the pool or are rescued.

Since most drownings occur when children fall into a swimming pool while fully clothed, ISR teaches children how to perform the rollback-to-float and swim-float-swim methods in their everyday clothes.

When to start ISR swim lessons

Children can begin ISR lessons at any age between 6 months and 6 years old.

FAQs about ISR lessons

How long are ISR lessons?

Most ISR instructors offer a 6-week program that includes lessons for 10 minutes per day, 5 days per week. This approach helps children learn more quickly through repetition and consistency. It also takes into account that the lessons can be tiring, and most young children can only focus on tasks for short periods of time.

Are ISR swim lessons safe?

ISR is dedicated to safety and prioritizes your child's health and well-being. ISR instructors undergo rigorous training and must attend yearly recertification and continuing education programs. Instructors follow multiple safety protocols and tailor each lesson to your child's unique medical and developmental readiness.

Are ISR swim lessons worth it?

Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and it is completely preventable. ISR swim lessons teach your child crucial self-rescue skills to help them survive long enough to be rescued if they fall into the water.

ISR teaches children techniques like floating unassisted and holding their breath underwater to help them survive until rescued. However, ISR lessons typically do not include other swim strokes.

  • Traditional swimming lessons cost $100 to $160 per month for once-weekly group classes or $40 to $80 per hour for private lessons.

  • At the YMCA, swimming lessons cost $5 to $30 per class for group lessons or $30 to $90 per class for private instruction. Several YMCA locations across the United States also offer ISR swim lessons.
