I got started teaching basketball based on my deep passion for the game and extensive playing experience. I played high school basketball at Anacostia High in Washington, D.C., from 1983 to 1986, then continued at the college level, playing at Harford Community College (1986-87), Brevard Community College (1988-89), and being part of the first basketball team at Life University (1991-93). After my playing career, I transitioned into coaching and training, recognizing a need to help young athletes develop their skills. I founded a youth organization in Brevard, Florida, called God’s Anointed Now Generation, dedicated to mentoring and training young players. Over the years, Ive coached and trained basketball players at every level, from elementary to college. My experience also includes coaching on the Anthony Edwards Organization on the Adidas circuit for the past three years. My journey into basketball training and coaching has been fueled by a combination of firsthand experience, a passion for player development, and a desire to give back to the game. Now, through Premier Elite Basketball Academy, I’m using that knowledge to help players reach their full potential.
I have worked with basketball players at all levels, from elementary school to college, and have trained some of the best basketball players in the country. Your experience spans across youth players developing foundational skills, high school athletes looking to elevate their game for recruitment, and college-level athletes refining their skills for the next level. Additionally, my involvement in the Anthony Edwards organization on the Adidas circuit suggests Ive worked with elite and highly competitive prospects.
I recently promoted basketball personal training sessions at Hoop Nation in Atlanta, encouraging players in the area to come train with me. That shows my dedication to helping athletes develop their skills.
If a student is looking to hire a basketball trainer in my area of expertise, I would advise them to consider the following: 1. Define Their Goals – Understand what they want to achieve (e.g., improving shooting, ball-handling, defense, basketball IQ, conditioning, etc.) so they can find a trainer who specializes in those areas. 2. Check the Trainer’s Experience & Credentials – Look for a trainer with a strong background in coaching, playing experience, and a track record of developing players. You, for example, have coached at all levels and trained high-level athletes. 3. Ask About Their Training Philosophy – Every trainer has a different approach. Some focus on fundamentals, while others emphasize game situations or strength and conditioning. Make sure their style matches the student’s needs. 4. Observe a Session or Seek Reviews – If possible, they should watch a training session or speak with other players who have worked with the trainer to gauge their effectiveness and communication skills. 5. Look for Personalization – A great trainer adapts to each athlete’s strengths and weaknesses rather than using a one-size-fits-all program. 6. Evaluate Communication & Teaching Ability – The best trainers are not just skilled but also great teachers who can explain drills, correct mistakes, and motivate players. 7. Consider Availability & Commitment – Ensure the trainer has availability that fits the student’s schedule and is committed to their long-term development. 8. Assess Cost & Value – While price is a factor, the focus should be on value—how much the student is improving under the trainer’s guidance. 9. Location & Convenience – Finding a trainer who operates at a convenient gym or training facility will help with consistency in training. 10. Trial Session – Before committing long-term, it’s a good idea to book a single session to see if the trainer is the right fit.
Personal Goals & Needs 1. What are my short-term and long-term basketball goals? (e.g., making the team, improving shooting, increasing speed, etc.) 2. What specific skills do I need to improve? (e.g., ball handling, shooting, defense, footwork, basketball IQ) 3. What are my biggest weaknesses on the court? 4. What are my strengths, and how can I take them to the next level? Training Preferences & Commitment 5. How often am I willing and able to train? (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.) 6. What type of training do I prefer? (private 1-on-1, small group, team training) 7. Do I have any past injuries or physical limitations the trainer should know about? 8. Am I looking for in-season maintenance or off-season skill development? Trainer’s Fit & Style 9. What type of coaching style works best for me? (strict and intense, positive and encouraging, technical and detailed) 10. What do I expect from a trainer in terms of communication, feedback, and accountability? 11. Does the trainer have experience coaching players at my level? (youth, high school, college, etc.) Logistics & Budget 12. What is my budget for training sessions? 13. Am I willing to travel for training, or do I need something close to home? 14. What equipment or gear will I need for training sessions? 15. What is the trainer’s cancellation or rescheduling policy?
