Cindy H. says, "Tracy with One Stitch at a time is an amzaing teacher. I enjoyed our class, and her years of experience brings a wealth of knowledge to the teaching that is priceless. She is a joy to work with and has great lesson plans. Within a couple classes I was able to sew a simple skirt and actually wear it. I would highly recommend her to learn how to sew at any level." My name is Angelica, I have been an architect for 8 years and an artist for as long as I can remember. Four years ago, I decided to venture into the world of art, and I have had the opportunity to learn and experiment with various techniques applied to the visual arts. Since then, I have been teaching personalized or group classes, both in-person and online, and I even offer online courses. Among the techniques I teach are acrylic painting, watercolor, texturing, oil painting, pastels, colored pencils, among others. I enjoy teaching and learning; I am proactive, resourceful, and empathetic.

Debra M. says, "The entire experience was transformational! Under Maritza Molina's expert teaching ability, I progressed from complete novice to accomplished artist. Her method of instruction and demo followed by student's practice and constructive critique was instrumental in my foundational drawing progress. Not only is Maritza an extremely gifted artist, she has the added talent of being able to patiently share, coach and encourage all her students at their various levels. It was truly a pleasure being one of her students. I credit her with awakening in me a talent I did not think possible! " Read more

Walter N. says, "Mary Ellen is a fantastic teacher who really engages you with art and not only teaches you but makes you want to learn. When I first started taking lessons, I had no art experience apart from looking at it. But after taking lessons with her, my ability to express myself through art and make paintings that I never thought would be made has astounded me. In addition to her skill, she is also very very nice and patient. She is willing to work with you at every step of the way and will make your experience one of the most positive ones you'll have on the website." Read more

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do art classes cost near me?

Art classes cost $20 to $50 for a one-time session or $100 to $500 for a class including 6 to 10 weekly sessions. Prices for art classes depend on your location, the type of art, the school or museum offering the class, and whether the fee includes materials and art supplies. Most art instructors provide a list of the required supplies which you must purchase separately.

Can you take art classes online?

You can take art classes online through CreativeLive, Udemy, ed2go, and art specialty websites like New Masters Academy (NMA) or The Art Studio NY. Many museums, universities, studios, and individual artists also offer online art classes.

Prices for online art classes are similar to in-studio classes and primarily depend on the instructor's artistic reputation and whether the course features prerecorded videos or is held live.

What types of art classes are available?

Popular art classes offered in most locations include:

  • Drawing and sketching
  • Painting with watercolor, oil, acrylics, or pastels

How do I find the best art classes near me?

Before you take the next step in your creative journey, follow these tips to ensure you find an art class that's a good fit for you:

  • First, determine what type of art you'd like to learn.
  • Decide if you want to take a one-time workshop or a multi-week course.
  • Read instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Browse their portfolio of artwork created by their past students.
  • Ask about fees, class sizes, and supplies needed.
  • Visit the studio or classroom in person to check it out before signing up for a class.
  • Wear clothes that can get dirty. Some classes have aprons, but you may still get paint or other art products on your clothes.

What questions should I ask before signing up for art classes?

Before you sign up for an art class, be sure to ask the instructor these questions:

  • Which class should I take as a first-time art student?
  • Does the fee include materials and supplies? If not, do you provide a supply list?
  • What subjects do the art lessons cover?
  • Where will the class meet?
  • Are the classes restricted to certain age groups?
  • How many students will be in the class?
  • Do you offer online art classes? Are the online classes taught live or prerecorded?
  • Can I buy a class as a gift for someone?

Back in 2013 I took two art classes from Maritza Molina. Basic and advanced drawing. Ms Molina is a talented artist and excellent teacher. She has great credentials being a graduate of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. From her I learned good drawing techniques which I apply to my daily work as an artist. I learned about the concepts of form, contour drawing, spatial relationship, positive and negative space, value, shading, etc. Also the more advanced subjects of foreshortening, perspective, still life and portraits. The material presented in class was reinforced by sensible homework. Ms Molina was always prepared, well organized and on time. She’s a cheerful person and very enthusiastic about art. She was a force in motivating her students. I benefited from taking her class and the knowledge I gained is extensive. She’s one of the best teachers I ever had,

He's the best teacher/mentor I ever had, and I don't think I could ever work and learn from anyone better. He's taught me everything I know about oil painting, drawing, photography, engraving -- literally EVERYTHING. He's so inspiring and attentive; he knows how to create almost anything (very well-rounded instructor). I've known Mr. Ouporov for years, he taught me so much about art and gave me the ambition to pursue it as a career. I used to draw little cartoons and disproportionate anime drawings in my sketchbook, and now I'm doing 6ft tall classical oil paintings. There's always a mutual sense of intellectual/artistic engagement, where you always feel like you're being supported, not judged. He's very professional and always enthusiastic to work with students.
