Kyle M. says, "I actually had the chance to see Coach Will in action before I even knew who he was. He and his son were out doing drills, and my two boys (8 and 10) asked if they could join in. Without hesitation he welcomed them. He wasn’t hired or obligated to do anything, he just let them jump in and encouraged them the whole time. I recently came across his profile and realized who he was, and now I can’t wait to see the work he’ll do with my sons this summer. Just from watching the progress his own son has made over the past few months, I’ve seen a big difference. He’s more confident, more skilled, and what really stood out is that he now recognizes his own mistakes and takes initiative to correct them. That says a lot about Coach Will’s approach, not just building athletes but building accountability and confidence." Read more

Your Basketball Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much does a personal basketball trainer cost?

The average cost of a personal basketball trainer ranges from $30 to $150 per hour for one-on-one sessions. The cost can be influenced by factors such as the player's level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), the trainer's experience and expertise, and the location where the training takes place.

Additionally, small group sessions of 2 to 4 children can cost $30 to $50 per session on average, while large group training of 4+ kids can cost $20 to $40 per session on average

How do you train for basketball?

A well-rounded basketball training regimen should include skill-specific workouts, strength and conditioning exercises, and a structured training program. Skill development includes shooting workouts, ball handling drills, and training tailored to your position, whether you’re a guard or post player.

Strength and conditioning exercises such as aerobic training and strength training for primary muscle groups like hips, quads, and glutes are critical. A structured 6-week training program that emphasizes form, technique, and skill progression should improve your game.

How many hours do basketball players train a week?

Basketball players, especially those aiming to improve their skills, may train for around 10 to 15 hours per week, depending on the level of their game. The specific distribution of training hours across skill development, strength training, and other aspects can vary based on individual needs and goals.

However, much of that training time does not require an instructor. Shooting hoops, working out at the gym, and playing pick-up games all count toward the total training time.

Is strength training important for basketball?

Yes, strengthtraining is essential for basketball players as it aids in the development of speed strength, absolute strength, and core strength. It boosts blast impulse, the ability to generate force rapidly, crucial for activities like jumping for rebounds and swift changes in direction.

Additionally, strength training enhances power output and agility, allowing players to respond quickly to on-court situations and maintain an edge over their opponents.

What questions should I ask a basketball trainer?

Ask these questions when picking a basketball trainer to help you meet your goals:

  • What is your background and experience in basketball training?
  • Have you worked with players at my skill level or position before?
  • What is your coaching philosophy and training style?
  • How do you tailor your training programs to individual needs?
  • What specific skills and aspects of the game do you emphasize in your training sessions?
  • How do you address both physical and mental aspects of player development?
  • Do you conduct initial assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement?
  • How do you track and measure a player's progress over time?
  • How do you incorporate injury prevention strategies into your training programs?
  • What steps do you take to ensure the well-being of your athletes?
  • What is your availability for training sessions?
  • How do you handle scheduling and potential conflicts?
  • How do you communicate with players and provide feedback?
  • What role do players and parents/guardians play in the feedback process?
  • What are your fees and payment structure?
  • Are there any long-term commitments or package deals available?
  • Can you provide references from previous clients or players you have trained?
  • How do you work with players to set and achieve realistic goals?
  • What expectations do you have for players in terms of commitment and effort?

How do I choose a basketball trainer?

When selecting a basketball trainer, consider the following tips:

  • Look for a trainer with a solid background and experience in basketball training. Ideally, they should have worked with players at your skill level or in your position.
  • Understand the trainer's coaching philosophy and training style. Ensure it aligns with your goals and preferences for skill development.
  • Inquire about the specific skills and aspects of the game that the trainer emphasizes. Make sure they cover the areas you want to improve.
  • Check if the trainer conducts initial assessments to identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensure the trainer incorporates injury prevention strategies into their programs.
  • Consider the trainer's communication style, which is vital for a successful training relationship.
  • Verify the trainer's availability for sessions fits your routine.
  • Seek references from previous clients or players the trainer has worked with.
  • Understand the trainer's fees and payment structure.

I like that fact that he was very patient. Very informative about the basics and fundamentals for the game and willing to show my son how it’s done .

I had a great conversation with Coach Will that really put me at ease and gave me confidence in his process. From the start, he was detailed and intentional about the training plan for my high school daughter. What really impressed me was that he didn’t just talk about drills and techniques. He asked thoughtful questions like what she’s already good at, what she wants to improve, and where she needs help. No other Trainer has taken the time to ask those things. He even requested to speak directly with my daughter to hear from her and better understand her goals, which really stood out to me. As a parent, it’s sometimes hard to know exactly what your kid wants to focus on, so having a coach/trainer who takes the time to listen made a big difference. On top of that, Coach Will went above and beyond by helping me put together a food and workout plan for my son, who’s heading to his D2 college this summer. That kind of support and guidance is rare. Most people charge for that . I was initially concerned about pricing and whether this would be just another cookie-cutter program, but the price is more than fair and the approach is anything but generic. Based on our conversation alone, I’m sold. Coach Will truly cares, and that makes all the difference.

Bri worked with my daughter leading up to her high school basketball tryouts. She really has a gift for working with teens. She pushed her to work hard and she actually looked forward to every session. I also noticed improvement in how my daughter handles stress and frustration even outside of basketball. Very grateful!
