Hello, my name is Anna Velzo, I am a professional oboist, recording artist, and teacher who provides oboe instruction to individuals of all levels and ages. I am now offering private oboe lessons online!
I have been teaching oboe since 2006. In lessons and coachings, I help students to self-evaluate, regularly set realistic goals and objectives, design and implement methods to accomplish these goals, and ultimately become their own teachers. I love sharing my love of music and the oboe with students, and I tailor my approach for each individual to help inspire and encourage them on their musical journey, and learning the oboe. For students interested, I also teach reed making skills too!
In addition to teaching my private home studio, I teach at First Conservatory of Music in La Grange, IL, and I am an adjunct professor of oboe at DePaul University School of Music.
As an active freelancer in Chicago, I regularly perform with various groups, which have included the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Camerata Chicago Chamber Orchestra, among others. I am the oboist of the International Chamber Artists. I have and continue to be invovled in many innovative classical projects as well as collaborations with other artists from other genres, and enjoy working in communities in outreach concerts. While studying in New York, I founded and led the world music group, Anna and the Post Road Band. In 2010, I released my debut album Escale, which can be found on itunes, Amazon, Cdbaby, and Pandora.
More info about me:
Anna is an outstanding oboe instructor and performer. Her ability to motivate students to achieve high levels of performance while being a compassionate educator is a refreshing combination of skills. It is clear that she is deeply committed to a holistic approach to her work with her students. After every lesson my son leaves excited to work on his next piece or technique because of Anna’s gift of being able to provide both positive and constructive feedback that inspires.
Anna V. is a talented oboist and gifted instructor. She instills a love of the oboe and music in students as she customizes her instruction to each student’s needs. My student looks forward to each lesson with Anna. She is approachable and charming for young students and experienced for challenging advanced oboists. As a professional musician, Anna’s instruction includes music theory, oboe mechanics and reed care. She sets her students up for success by teaching proper technique. In regards to coronavirus and distancing, my student was lucky to have in person lessons prior to covid. Switching to virtual lessons was seamless. Anna is skilled with the necessary technology to view student fingering, trouble shoot reeds, help set the mic, share screens etc. While in person lessons have the advantage over virtual ones, anyone new to Anna should know that a virtual lesson with her is beneficial. I can highly recommend Anna.
After taking 45+ years off from playing the oboe, I connected with Anna in the winter of 2019 at the age of 61. It has been a delightful journey and something that I have wanted to do as an adult for many years. Anna has taken me from being basically clueless to rediscovering my love for the oboe. Given that I basically had to relearn EVERYTHING, including how to read music, Anna has been very patient and encouraging. She is all that I want in a teacher and coach. Thank you, Anna!
