About

You will be guided by Travis Halsey, the recipient of the 2018, NYC Theatrrical Developmemt Funds - Outstanding Young Master of Design. Mr. Halsey has received numerous awards for both his design and technical skills related to theatrical sewing. He has sewn professional for the past 20 years, holding leading positions in many major American costume shops. Most recently at the Joffrey Ballet and Houston Ballet. He was the first seasons Tailor for the T.V. series Chicago P.D. as well as stitching for many movies including Divergent, Captive State and Chiraque. Besides his time patterning, cutting and assembling a diverse array of garments Mr. Halsey has taught costume making and sewing across the for the last 10 years: teaching from his Ravenswood studio, as a guest artist in universities, and as a traveling artist outside of the united states. Along with teaching in person he has demonstrated many sewing techniques to over 5 thousand students online. A lesson at HalseyOnstage is great for the beginner that has never touched a sewing machine, and also the student that has been sewing but would like to add more techniques to their skill bank. We wilL develop you hand sewing, domestic machine and industrial machine skills. We can also do patterning work for students in interested in that area. Lessons will begin w basics, and as we move thru those we can create projects for you that are fun and that add new skills to your sewing toolbox.

I enjoy the creative process and problem solving. A yd of fabric has so many possibilities. I love to combine techniques, math and creativity to see what you can create. It is very rewarding to share that process with students of all ages. Also as a teacher I am always learning, improving my skills and finding new ways to solve problems. Sharing that is incredibly satisfying.

Travis packs a LOT of information in his teaching classes. When watching a recording, I dont ever get all the info I need the first time I watch.

I learned more in five days than in an entire one credit construction class at a university. Very fun and welcoming environment!

Travis is a talented artist and a consummate professional. Hes also an amazingly gifted teach who is always willing to share his unique tips and tricks. Whether you are just learning to sew or think you know all the answers, Travis can teach you a quicker, cleaner, better and/or more creative way to do things. From sewing a pillowcase to outfitting a dance company, he is the best person to learn from. Wish I lived closer to Chicago, but its always worth the trip to take a class. His webinars are also some of the best instruction on the internet.

Whether you are experienced sewing costumes for dance or stage or a novice seamstress, this training will leave you satisfied! The quality of his teaching and his wealth of knowledge are second to none and he generously shares it with all his students! There is no question that he will not know the answer to and no question that goes unexplained, even if the class was taken a while ago! Every cent spent in training with him is worth gold; you will not find a better deal!

    Frequently asked questions

We will start on a home sewing machine and if you have sewn before we will review basics of threading and basic stitches.     If you have never sewn we will start with threading and go over all the different parts of the machine.  Then we will demonstrate and practice many kinds of stitches and seams.   Projects will develop as your skill improves.  Projects as simple as a pillow or bag, to very advanced pieces of clothing.  We age very adaptable and the goal is to learn new techniques and have some fun too.
