Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
New players must enter pitching school as a "new recruit" and are asked to attend call classes with their parent. New recruits are usually placed in classes with other recruits.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
2002 NCAA DIII National Champion
10+ Years Instructing Experience
National Fastpitch Coaches Association
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are conducted in small groups of 5-6 pitchers of similar age group and ability level. These "classes" must be purchased as a session, which are usually three months long. Prices vary from $300-$600 based on exact session length and scheduling structure (sometimes vary based on the season).
How did you get started teaching?
I worked in a real estate office after college and some of the agents had kids that wanted to learn how to pitch. There weren't many instructors in the area so after enough persuading they got me to show some of their daughters what I knew from my days in college and from my uncle who was my pitching coach growing up. From there, the demand was so high I was able to quit my job and start a pitching school full-time!
I asked Sarah Dec, another instructor at Practice Pro, to come on board after asking my uncle which former pitchers he taught would love to instruct. The first person he said was Sarah Dec - and he was right!
What types of students have you worked with?
From brand new pitchers from the 3rd grade through 12th grade to high-level pitchers at top DI schools.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of my 7th grade students had a goal of gaining speed. I told her she needed to get stronger and to get up to 50 perfect push-ups within 3 months. She was dedicated enough to practice her push-ups every day and built up to 50 by the deadline. She consiquently gained 4 miles per hour in 3 months. I love that she did what it took to succeed!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you get someone who has consistant time to see you, is reliable, and isn't planning to move away any time soon! Scheduling is the hardest thing with lessons and many instructors have limited time to see you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How much work will I have to put in to reach my goals?
What is your philosophy on teaching style?
What are your views on fundamentals and how are they different (or the same) than other coaches? Good instructors know what others are teaching, even if they disagree.
If I'm not sure I want to dedicate my time to being a pitcher yet, how can I benefit from your lessons?
How often do I need to come to lessons to get better?
