Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I set up an initial meeting where the potential student brings past work and clarifies future goals. We set up a schedule and personalized lesson plan within the next week.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a fine art degree from Watkins College of Art and Design. I have also taught and written curriculum for private schools, non- profits and teaching art therapy and art studio schools. I have studied education and art therapy along with spiritual direction. My future educational plans include certified spiritual direction with a focus on group art retreats.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge 30.00an hour for private lessons at my home studio with supplies included.
I also work at The Art Lab in the Carmel Arts District teaching for large and small groups of all ages. Check out The Art Lab Indy web site for Fall and Spring class updates. A large Summer Camp option is available.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught large home school group art classes in the context of art history and helped write curriculum while teaching art for a private classical elementary school. I have also worked for non- profits like Art with a Heart and The Indianapolis Art Center for inner city after school and Summer programs.
I presently do art based retreats for church groups, schools and professional groups using expressive excersizes to develop intuition.
Private and group lessons run from elementary ages to senior citizens in painting and drawing.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Trust your gut... make sure there is a non- intimidating exchange. Your comfort level and creative expression is linked. Look for a mixture of skill development and personal creative freedom. Skills only enhance artistic expression.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What style and medium of art are you interested in developing? A syllabus providing a framework to meet those goals should be provided by the instructor.
