Patricia B. says, "I wanted an instructor who focused on the instrument and music theory, not genre. And that’s exactly what I got. Mr. Joel is patient and understanding. He is also quite honestly supportive. Now, I can play the guitar, read music, know what I’m playing in tabs and figure out progressions by ear. So, I’m a happy student. Really, I am a guitarist.🙌🏽" Read more

Ted B. says, "John is not only an excellent guitarist, but he also has great pedagogical intuition, which is no doubt influenced by his own extensive experience being taught by world-class guitarists. Despite considering myself to be a pretty good self-learner, John has been able on numerous occasions to point out and help me eliminate various subtle inefficiencies in the motion of both my left and right hands, which has led to more fluidity and less flubbing in my playing. The result is a more enjoyable playing experience with less frustration, as well as more freedom to focus on artistic interpretation. I can't recommend John highly enough." Read more

Real guitar technique, soloing, improvisation that sounds great (my favorite to play and teach) what I call no theory theory. Proper practicing techniques and philosophy. The joy of the journey of music! I have been teaching for over 25 years, and playing forever :). https://youtu.be/JXniE-bNX6c?si=ZPpx4_aiRarTEofw

I am dedicated to making every guitar student play to the best of thier abilities and beyond. I use many different approaches because each young player presents different learning challages and different circumstances, be it electric guitar or folk guitar styles. It is great to see young guitarist become skilled enough to play solo or in a band. A good feeling knowing that I helped create a new guitar player play the music and style they dreamed of. .......Joe Cuglietta...

I am a young engineer living in philadelphia. I can be a unique teacher for you because I understand what it's like to struggle with something and need one on one help. In school I always learned better in intimate settings. Wether it be math or guitar I can provide a wide base of knowledge and experience. To be honest the work I do is not teaching. I am picking up jobs with lessons because I'dlike to have a side gig and these are the things I actually enjoy doing in my freetime. It's not particularly work for me and if it weren't for gas and time I'd be inclined to just do it for free. The thought of meeting new people and helping them devel...

I'm a guitarist, composer, and instructor with 10+ years of experience. While I specialize in rock/metal styles, I'm also comfortable in jazz, electronic and orchestral settings. My Instagram serves as a hub for most of my musical activity, but my solo project Joelaul (featuring artists such as Jake Howsam Lowe of Plini) can be found on any streaming platform! I think music is one of our most powerful tools for connection, and when it comes to my students and supporters, nurturing that connection is the most important thing. Let's hang! I get to communicate and explore what I'm most passionate about while leading others toward that passion in...

How much do classical guitar lessons cost near me?

Most classical guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for durations of 30 to 60 minutes. One-on-one lessons typically cost between $45 and $70 per hour, whereas group sessions are a more affordable option at $25 to $35 per class.

For those who prefer a digital classroom, online lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour. Monthly ongoing instruction costs $170 to $315 with a prepaid discount.

Why should I take classical guitar lessons?

You should take classical guitar lessons if you have an acoustic guitar and want to learn how to play classical concertos or Spanish-style music with fingerpicking.

Classical guitar lessons teach you how to:

  • Use nylon-string guitars and strum with the fingers instead of a pick
  • Develop your fingers to focus on complex fingerpicking techniques
  • Understand classical music theory and sight-reading

At what age should I start classical guitar lessons?

Children generally begin their classical guitar journey between the ages of 6 to 10, or as soon as they can hold the instrument well with enough hand strength to press the strings. Adults of all ages can master the instrument with the correct guidance and consistent practice.

How many classical guitar lessons do I need?

The number of weekly classical guitar lessons you need will depend on your personal goals and dedication to practice. A beginner might grasp a simple song within 2 to 6 months, but acquiring proficiency like a professional requires 4 to 10 years on average.

How do I find the best classical guitar lessons near me?

You can find proficient classical guitar tutors nearby by looking at the listings here on the Lessons platform. Sometimes teachers ara available through local music stores too.

Before hiring your tutor, always:

  • Obtain quotes from a minimum of 3 teachers and clarify what they teach.
  • Review feedback about them on Google and the Lessons site.
  • Request a reference list of their past students.
  • Ask fellow parents about their children's experiences with the tutor.
  • Secure a written agreement and schedule prior to the first session.
  • Make small initial payments to gauge the tutor's compatibility before committing to a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing a classical guitar teacher?

Ask these pertinent questions to help you pick a classical guitar teacher:

  • Did you study music formally, and what qualifications do you have?
  • How many years have you been teaching classical guitar?
  • Could I have a trial lesson to see if your teaching method works for me?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Which model of acoustic guitar should I purchase?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice is required?
  • What type of strings are best for beginners?
  • Which books should I buy for learning classical guitar?
  • Can you accommodate different learning styles?
  • What essentials should I bring to class, and how long is each session?
  • Can I have a written copy of our class schedule?
  • What is your policy for missed classes?
  • Am I allowed to suggest songs that I would like to learn?

John is an excellent teacher. Even though I have only had a few lessons with him, he has made a major impact on my playing. First, he improved my tone by carefully analyzing my fingernail shape and how I was striking the strings, and then showing me how to file my nails more effectively, The difference is tone was amazing. He then came up with new fingerings for some Bach and Borroso pieces I was working on that made difficult passages easier to play as well as more musical sounding. John also made other recommendations for phrasing and highlighting the melody lines, which came from his careful listening to my playing. Between lessons, he was available for lengthy email discussions and he send me PDFs of music I requested. Finally, John is very warm, personable, and approachable, and he offers critiques and recommendations in a matter-of-fact, generous manner that makes it easy to hear. He is also willing to share his own struggles with the classical guitar, which is disarming and reassuring. Oh-- and BTW he is an excellent player! I've loved listening to him play either live or in videos.

I began taking lessons when I was ~7 years old and have vivid memories of Marlis gently challenging me, easily navigating my stubbornness and encouraging me with increasingly interesting songs and scales. I am still playing guitar 20 years later and fondly look back to those lessons. I cannot begin to explain the importance Marlis has had on my guitar playing and I highly recommend her as a teacher.
