Owen M. says, "I took guitar lessons with Jesse Kessler and they were great! Jesse is extremely knowledgable in all things music. He can answer any questions you may have about physical technique, theory, equipment, recording, teaching, etc. I had played guitar for about 2 years prior to taking lessons with Jesse and with his unique teaching style and helpful tips, my playing quickly began to improve significantly. He is an extremely friendly and patient teacher as well, and will do everything he can to make sure you are getting the most out of his lessons. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, I would highly recommend lessons with Jesse. " Read more

Your electric guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do electric guitar lessons cost near me?

Electric guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session with lengths of 30 to 60 minutes each. Private tuition costs $45 to $70 per hour, while group sessions are more wallet-friendly at $25 to $35 per class.

  • For ongoing classes, you'll pay $170 to $315 per month with the prepaid discount.
  • Online lessons cost anywhere from $35 to $55 per hour and let you jam with a teacher from the comfort of your own home.

Are electric guitar lessons worth it?

Electric guitar lessons are worth it if you want to learn more at a faster pace, develop a better technique, and get customized instructions to improve your style. Only an experienced electric guitar player can understand how to help you improve, so don't settle for a general guitar instructor.

What age is good to start electric guitar lessons?

A good age for kids to start electric guitar lessons is from 6 to 10 years old. Another indication they're ready to learn is whenever they're physically able to hold the guitar and have the hand strength to press the strings.

Adults of all ages can also start electric guitar lessons at any time. With the right guidance and consistent practice, anyone can master the electric guitar.

How many lessons does it take to learn electric guitar?

The number of lessons it takes you to learn electric guitar depends on your goals and how much time you dedicate to practicing those epic solos. Playing a simple tune might take 2 to 6 months of weekly classes.

If you're aiming to rock out like a pro, expect a time investment of 4 to 10 years.

Are acoustic and electric guitar lessons the same?

Acoustic and electric guitar lessons aren't the same because these are two entirely different instruments with unique equipment features.

Learning to play electric guitar requires:

  • Knowing how to use an amplifier and pedals that create sound effects
  • Understanding how to adjust the speaker connection
  • Knowledge of genres like rock, metal, blues, and jazz
  • Special techniques like power chords, palm muting, and string bending

Learning to play an acoustic guitar means you focus on classical, folk, country, pop, or blues music. A pick is optional in acoustic lessons, and you don't need amplifiers or cables. Acoustic teachers also place more emphasis on fingerpicking patterns.

How do I find the best electric guitar lessons near me?

You can find the best electric guitar lessons nearby to suit your needs by checking out our teacher listings her on the Lessons website. Your local music stores are also great places to start when scouting for the best guitar instructors.

Before making a decision, you should:

  • Compare prices from 3 different teachers and ask what their lessons include.
  • Check out their reviews on Google and Lessons.
  • Request for a references list of past students to verify their track record.
  • Ask for opinions from other parents on what their kids think of the teacher.
  • Obtain a written schedule and contract before the first lesson.
  • Pay for a couple of sessions to see what you think before fully committing to a month's worth of lessons.

What questions do I ask when choosing an electric guitar teacher?

Ask potential electric guitar teacher these questions before hiring:

  • Did you study music in school, and what qualifications did you earn?
  • How long have you been teaching electric guitar?
  • Can I sample a lesson to gauge if your teaching style suits me?
  • What's the average age of your students?
  • What type of electric guitar would you recommend for me?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice should I put in?
  • What resources or books would you recommend for learning electric guitar?
  • Can you adapt your teaching methodology if I'm struggling with a concept?
  • What should I bring to class, and how long does each session last?
  • Could I get a copy of our timetable and contract terms?
  • What's your policy regarding missed classes due to unforeseen circumstances?
  • Can I choose some songs that I'd love to learn?

I have been getting guitar lessons with Bryan for over two years. As a forty something year old, who can be very stuck in his ways, Bryan has been abundantly patient with my slow learning process. He is thoroughly knowledgable of the guitar, adapts to my learning curve, finds real life examples that helps move me along in the right direction. So very thankful I decided to go with Bryan as my teacher. He does the music world good simply being the kind of teacher he is.

Lessons with Tim were always fun and productive. He gave specific suggestions about technique to give me a better sound and he taught me a variety of ways to practice that continue to help me learn and understand jazz standards today. In addition to all of this, Tim is very encouraging and he creates a safe and fun learning environment.

I wanted to first share, before my lessons with Romantic Devil Records, I never even picked up an instrument. I thought learning to play was not something I had the time for or even the skills to do. I first tried to learn via an app and it just didn't work for me. I have been taking lessons with Carla for many years and I was wrong. Carla was able to personalize my lessons based on how I learn. It goes beyond playing, she also knows music theory and history. With Carla's teaching I learned how to play the guitar, piano and even the harmonica! She starts you with the basics and then breaks down the songs you love to hear and sing along to into a fun lesson. I am now playing more advanced songs and even have written a song with her help. Being able to play music has had such a positive impact in my life. I appreciate everything I have learned and continue to learn each lesson. And also have some fun and laughs along the way. Thank you Carla and Romantic Devil Records! I highly recommend!

I HIGHLY recommend Stu as a music teacher. The library where I work (Norfolk Library in Norfolk, CT) offered a 6-week adult harmonica class with Stu. In addition to working with Stu on the logistics of the course as a library employee, I also attended as a student. In both regards, Stu is an excellent teacher and presenter. As a presenter, he clearly communicated with the library in a timely manner. We were well prepared for offering the course. As a student, I enjoyed Stu's teaching style immensely! He is patient and encouraging and we had a lot of fun in the course. Several of the other students in the course have all shared that they found Stu to have excellent teaching skills. In fact, the students and the Library were so pleased with the class, we are offering a 6-week Harmonica II class to begin in May.

I came to guitar late. I had one never got around to learning how to play it. We had a flood in our basement and I came home to it floating right past me. Fast forward, my girlfriend got me an electric and a few lessons with Chris Merola. 2 years on, still going. I didn’t know a thing, now I play, might even get a band together!?

Joe is very easy to talk to and work with. He picked songs he knew I would like and were also challenging to play. He broke the songs into parts I could learn. Joe showed me hand exercises to really improved my playing. He has a great personality and as a teacher , he is extremely knowledgeable in music and was a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend joe as a bass teacher to anyone.
