Halina Maas recently earned her B.A. in Music for bassoon performance at the University of Delaware, magna cum laude. She has been playing bassoon for 13 years and has received a number of awards throughout her career including: United States Airforce Band Symposium, Academie-Philharmonique, Semper Fidelis Excellence in Musicianship Award, Presser Award for Musical Excellence, and University of Delaware School of Music Student Award for Music Theory and History.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
With the goal of building off any playing experience, our first lesson will start with a conversation about the student's Playing through fundamentals is always important. When starting with a new student, this is a particularly good way of guaging their comfort with the instrument and identifying aspects to focus on.

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a number of middle school aged musicians in the past, both on bassoon and other woodwinds. It was so exciting to teach youg musicians new aspects of their instrument and help them explore aspects like range, breath control, tone quality, etc.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Music is subjective, and so are teacher's appraoches. Sometimes, it helps to try a lesson with a variety of teachers before deciding on which personality you feel will be most helpful in your growth as a musician.
