Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I provide a comprehensive speech evaluation. We establish the goals that the student wishes to reach. I create a tailored lesson plan reflecting those goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, Concentration in Translation and Interpretation, from Hunter College, CUNY New York, NY. I took courses in linguistics which included morphology and phonology.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$45 for a 30-45-minute lesson. We can make the lessons longer at a discounted rate. I find that 30 minutes is the ideal amount of time.
How did you get started teaching?
I have a knack for teaching. As a child, I would line up my plush toys and 'teach' them. I tutored biology in high school. My first job was as a teaching assistant at a daycare center. Then I gave science demonstrations at the Liberty Science Center. The Monsignor at my grandmother's church suggested that I could teach ESL classes at his Parish 10 years ago, and I have been teaching ESL part-time ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages in-person and online, from as young as 5 to retired seniors. I have had the privilege of working with students from around the world. I've had Chinese, Mongolian, Afghan, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, and Spanish speakers from all over the Americas and Spain.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
There was a student who started in my beginner English class. He was a laundry attendant at a hotel at that time. I tailored my lessons to the hotel environment. He made significant progress in his studies. He was eventually promoted to the maintenance department.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find an enthusiastic teacher who will teach you how to learn, not just what to learn.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is my goal? How will I know if I have achieved that goal? What are my weaknesses? What are my strengths? Most importantly, why am I learning English? Knowing your Why is a great motivator to keep you focused on your learning goals.
