How did you get started teaching?
Life long athlete, I began by helping friends and people whose team I might have been on at the time. Over time as I went through certification programs I began to take on athletes and coach teams. I find it really gratifying!
What types of students have you worked with?
A range from kids to teens up through adults into their late 60's! These also can range from incredible athletes that have won International and National championships to 'citizen' riders just trying to learn how to ride a bike and maybe participate in a local bike tour, or new runners just trying to participate in a 5k.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
2017 was a great year, with so many successes for my athletes. I'll give two - one where I rode alongside a 62 year old gentleman in a 2 day bike tour, he had just learned how to ride a bike this year! The second was getting the chance to coach one of my athletes to the ITU World Championships in Penticton this year. That was a thrill!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Start with modest, incremental goals, and make sure you find a coach or trainer that sees your development as a process and is able to communicate those steps to you. Looking too far into the future can be discouraging for anyone!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about how much time you have to commit to your training. Also think about practical goals as well as 'stretch' goals. Too many people have lofty goals that are so far away - you have got to look at the road map and find the steps that will work for you to keep you excited and motivated.
A life in sport can be long!
