I offer a fresh perspective on the role of the music teacher. I'm certainly here to help my students learn the fundamentals, but I believe in a why-first approach to lessons. If I can't clearly articulate the reason why we're doing something and the impact it will have on a student's progress or understanding, then we don't do it. Nothing is arbitrary, and every moment is useful. I try to make sense of things by observing the patterns and relationships at play in the world around me, and I often employ this approach in my curriculum. Whether we're discussing scales, chords, saxophone technique, vocal technique or songwriting—everything can be...

Eric B. says, "My son Tom was a first-year public school band student (saxophone) in fourth grade. I wanted to keep him playing during the summer, and Matt really came through with challenging and engaging practice sessions. Tom said it was harder than band practice, and pretty soon I found that he was opening the case and practicing on his own without any prompting from me. Matt helped him pick some music to work on, set some goals, and they consistently worked and advanced, and worked and advanced. Tom did his lessons over Zoom and it was ideal. I could hear in the tone in my son's voice that he really liked Matt and felt relaxed. And then I would hear this organized, structured practice session, and I was amazed at how Tom improved. This fall a buddy of Tom's from another school asked the Band teacher if he know my son. The Band teacher said yes he did, and that Tom was the best saxophone player in the fifth grade! I'm grateful to Matt for working with my kid, and I'm looking forward to hiring him again." Read more

The son of two music teachers, I have been immersed in music, first violin, then piano, and finally trombone, since the age of 7. I fell in love with jazz, especially Dixieland, Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, through Miles Davis, JJ Johnson and beyond, when I was a teenager, but ultimately my main focus has been on Classical music for most of my career. I attended Juilliard Pre-College, Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School, where I studied with the top trombonists in the classical orchestral field, and I now perform with some of the top orchestras in New York City, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, America...

Max M. says, "Art is just such an incredible teacher and such a good and compassionate soul. My playing has improved so much, but so has my outlook on life and my sense of compassion. He’s found the perfect balance— being a gentle, kind teacher while at the same time able to achieve incredible results with his students without any of the strictness, restrictiveness, or heavy homework expectations I’ve experienced with other teachers. Andrew is great! My son is brand new to music and the clarinet. Andrew keeps him engaged for their virtual lesson and my son is catching on quickly and he loves his lessons.

He's a great teacher: encouraging, but also knows when and how to critique and not discourage a beginner. Makes sure it is challenging, but not overwhelming. Encyclopedic knowledge of jazz and music theory. Definitely recommend!

I’m retired and getting back into sax after many years. Mr. Niwa’s clear explanations and patient teaching have helped me understand improvisation in a way I never did when I was younger.

I like how Matt insists on slowing everything down to really get a good understanding of notes, rythem, etc. He is a very fun person and knows a LOT about music. Matt is a super supportive instructor!

This guy makes the lessons super easy, but more important he is not the kind of person who makes you feel like you’re less because you don’t know anything, instead he motivates you to keep learning and to actually like the instrument that you’re playing

As co-prinicpal trumpet and Associate Music Director of the Hanover Wind Symphony it's my pleasure to have worked with Dimitry for over 15 years. Dimitry is an exceptionally gifted and highly respected clarinetist who brings years of global performance experience to his teaching. Polite, patient and well spoken it is a pleasure to listen to him speak about music, no matter what the subject or genre. His passion for his craft is evident from the very first time you meet him. I highly recommend Dimity as a performer and educator!
