What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Find out what level they are artistically and what they want to accomplish with lessons.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied art at Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach in California. I paint in oils doing portraits, landscapes and fantasy art. I also do some work in color pencil and brush pen. I work mainly on commission, selling mostly portraits.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For beginners, I charge $15/hr. More advanced students will be $20/hr,
How did you get started teaching?
People have asked me questions about painting and how it's done. I like to share my knowledge and mentor talent.
What types of students have you worked with?
Just family as yet, nothing professional. I have given away pointers for free. I can work with children, young adults to older adults.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I did an art show at a winery last year. A young girl asked me a lot of questions about painting portraits. I could see and feel the eagerness in her, wanting to know more. I spent a good deal of time with her. She had never painted before but I could see she was intrigued. I hope I inspired her to give it a try.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I work with oils which can be tricky, paint has a life. Sometimes things don't go as planned, sometimes the life of the paint leads you. Sometimes you may want to start over. In any case, you will always learn from what you paint and observe. Observe your subject and be inspired and never be discouraged.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How much will I need to spend on supplies?
What is my level of ability?
What are my goals; is this a hobby, a career choice, a student that needs some tutoring?
