About this pro

Kevin Schmidt M.A.T. founded Westside Basketball 18 years ago for athletes to be trained by certified professionals. The primary mission is to create a place for kids to embrace their love of basketball and develop their full potential.

Academy coaches work with athletes to improve their ball handling, shooting, passing, dribbling, individual and team defense, and proper footwork for attack moves in basketball. Our coaches have played the game and have coached youths at all levels. At the Academy, we understand kids, we understand how they learn and we know how to make them successful.

Participants in our program will learn the art of basketball through proper footwork and proper mechanics. They will learn that their passion, commitment and hard work will lead to confidence and will allow them to perform at their highest level.

My education is a BA in Physical Education and a Masters in teaching with emphasis in sports psychology and coaching.  My training certification includes: Personal Training, Group Training and Nutrition.  I also have certification in Education Administration, OSAA officiating, Health Education, Concussion Management, First Aid, Heat Stroke or Heat Exhaustion and have served in a variety of leadership positions.

I have coached and been blessed to train all levels of boys and girls in 7 states and Canada. Starting Westside Basketball Academy, providing clinics and camps across our state and leading camps in other states, giving private lessons to some of the best athletes in Oregon has been just awesome doing what you love.  I have helped lead teams to AAU and BCI state championship and coached over 30 winning teams as well. Having the opportunity to train and coach some of the best Oregon has to offer in the sport of basketball has produced some great memories and relationships.  One on one time with legendary coaches has been an honor and a learning has helped be develop as a coach and trainer.

My greatest satisfaction was to provide a safe environment for so many great athletes to train. This includes my own daughters who earned Players of the Year awards for their respective high School teams.  They have both followed in my footsteps and have become teachers and coaches.  This is obviously a point of pride for any father.

My son really enjoyed his coaching sessions with coach Kevin and improved his skills and confidence in a major way. I would highly recommend Kevin!

Kevin is an amazing trainer. Our daughter has been playing basketball since the 3rd grade first with rec ball then competitively through our local high school. She has always been a mediocre player. In just in a few sessions Kevin took my freshman daughter from a bench player to a starter. He taught her the "why" of basketball which is needed for kids to understand how to play as well as why they need to perform a certain move. Kevin also taught her the game of basketball and how to read the court. He knows how to help her have buy in to her own training by listening to her point of view. While helping her with her confidence. By having her see her own improvement with video and encouragement. The money spent on training was worth it 10 fold! We will continue to have Kevin train our daughter in an out of the season to keep her skills building. You won't regret having Kevin train your child!

I finally have time to write the kind of “thank-you” you deserve for the marvelous learning experience you provided for my son, Evan, and me last summer in Seaside. You are a master teacher in all respects—your capacity to establish rapport so quickly combined with the tight organization, excellent use of time, cutting edge pedagogy and infectious enthusiasm was inspirational. Thanks so much for allowing me to observe so closely.

Look at the credentials and experience of the trainer.  If they don't have a degree in some form of physical education in some form don't are waste your time.
