Hi! My name is Katy and I teach sewing, crafting and art out of my home studio in Tigard. My studio is already setup with sewing machines, tools and supplies. No experience is necessary to start a sewing project. I can also teach via zoom or travel to your place for a lesson. Find my classes & workshops at www.Tatiandme.com
What sets my business apart is my ability to break down the practice and principles of sewing into manageable steps to accommodate my student's ability and experience. I design fun projects that engage my students. I encourage my students to tap into their individuality and their unique creative point of view instead of just copying my ideas. I'm outgoing, enthusiastic and love what I do.
I have taught sewing, crafting and painting for over 15 years. I was adjunct faculty at the Art institute of Portland for 10 years where I taught sewing, fashion history, forecasting, and apparel design. I then taught for 5 years at Nic & Fig's, a modern day makery. I taught private as well as group classes and ran annual summer camps. I have taught kids and adults at every level of experience. You can visit my Instagram page dedicated to my classes and workshops at Openstudiowithkaty
I have the experience to teach various sewing levels. I also design crafting projects and have done many demonstrations on Katu Afternoon Live, a local tv program. I am also a proficient artist and have just started teaching from my home studio. I am a 'maker' and enjoy inspiring others to discover their creativity. I have a BA in economics, an associate degree in Apparel Design and a Master's of Curriculum Design in Education.

In addition, I have been the owner and designer of Tati & Me for the past 8 years. I design, manufacture and sell a limited-edition collection of dresses for ages 1-8. I have been selling my dresses online and at 3 select retailers since 2012.
The process of making and how it creates a community of creatives.
My girls (age 8,12,14) had a wonderful time working in the studio. They experienced both the joy and creativity exuded in the Katy's teaching. Each of my daughters came away having increased their sewing skills 10 fold. My youngest did 2 of the classes and was thrilled with her animal, leggings, scrunchies, masks, and more. She came in with almost no sewing skills. Not only did she enjoy the time, but she was able to take what she learned and start sewing some of her own at home. My older 2 were a little jealous and wanted to do something of their own. Even though they are significantly older, they had just as much fun as their little sister. Since taking the 3 hour class, they have started sewing on their own like crazy! I am absolutely thrilled with all that they learned and what a fun time they had. They are all begging to go back for more!!!
Katy is great! She is patient, fun and helps support and fuel my daughter’s creative interests.
We loved sewing with Katy. She was very patient and able to work with beginning sewers. The projects were creative and my girls loved them. Katy's enthusiasm has seeded a passion for sewing now.
I usually spend 30 minutes going over the in's & out's of the sewing machine: how go thread the machine, make a bobbin, and various features. Then move onto a quick project to get hands-on experience before delving into the project.

Look for someone who not only has teaching experience but someone who has the right interpersonal communication skills to make you feel as ease and help you enjoy the whole process. Also, look for projects that excite you past the pillow case!
Do I need to bring my own sewing machine?
Do I need to buy my own fabric or do you provide some? How about pattens?
How long will it take for the project?
Will you teach me the basics and help me build the fundamental skills and sewing habits?
