Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Finding out how much experience the student has making a garment on a sewing machine. Also finding out what they are looking to get out of the sewing lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Many years ago my grandparents worked in sewing factories and taught me at a very young age how to use a home sewing machine and an industrial machine. When I attended HS I had the privilege of having a wonderful sewing teacher for 4 years that mentored me and guided me to the Fashion Institute of Technology. I majored in Pattern Making and received an AAS degree. I've been working in the Fashion Industry since 1987.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing is based on a 2 hour session. This gives the students plenty of time to understand and understand without rushing. If the student needs more time, it's is $15 an hour for overtime.
How did you get started teaching?
I started Teaching and mentoring individuals because they either found me or new me. They had a passion and were willing to learn about fashion.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students that didn't know a thing about garment construction to professionals that were semi familiar around a sewing machine.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The best thing you can do when looking for a teacher is to know exactly what it is you want to learn & find out if that instructor can help you achieve your goal.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
After figuring out what you are looking to gain out of the class, you should ask the instructor how many lessons would it take for me to accomplish my goals.
