Cynthia says, "Mr. Rimmer has been teaching my son since he was 5 (he is now 14). My son has performed with him at coffee houses and at Holiday shows locally. He is extremely patient with small children and very adaptable. He always leaves homework for the week which only helps to improve skills for the following lesson. He answers any and all questions, explains the music/skill until it is understood. Overall, a fantastic teacher and an amazing guitar player!" Read more

My teaching approach: I tailor my lessons to fit the students goals. Beginner students want to learn songs, not theory. So I get the student playing /singing before I focus on scales and theory. I offer online lessons only for convenience for busy schedules and flexibility with appointments. I also determine what your learning style is, so that I can effectively teach you. I have over 18 years teaching experience in guitar and voice, and I teach songwriting and ukulele as well. I've been performing locally and internationally for over 7 years. My influences are: The Beatles, the Killers, Patty Griffin, Ray LaMontagne, 50's music, Eva Cassidy...

Marilyn M. says, "Jon is an excellent guitarist. He has a solid grasp of music theory and can explain it very well to a beginning player, intermediate player or advanced player. His teaching style is one of the best. He is caring and wants to see each student succeed at learning the guitar. I’ve had several guitar teachers and Jon is absolutely my favorite because he teaches to my level and doesn’t get off track. He constantly and gently encourages. I highly recommend Jon for teaching any level of guitar you wish to learn! You have to practice but you will see results and become more competent in your ability to play! " Read more

I’ve been playing the guitar for 20 years now. I’ve played in churches. Had my own band and write and produce my own music. My main focus is to help beginner guitarist who want to make their own music build a solid foundation in chords and scales structure. Learning strum and picking patterns with inquiring solid practice techniques and putting slight music theory behind it. I believe knowing too much theory especially music writing guitarist can hinder yourself to exploring new sounds. Which will allow you come up with your own Melodie’s and being original. If you’re wanting to be a technical guitarist and be engulfed in theory I suggest fi

Are electric guitar lessons worth it?

Electric guitar lessons are worth it if you want to learn more at a faster pace, develop a better technique, and get customized instructions to improve your style. Only an experienced electric guitar player can understand how to help you improve, so don't settle for a general guitar instructor.

What age is good to start electric guitar lessons?

Are acoustic and electric guitar lessons the same?

Acoustic and electric guitar lessons aren't the same because these are two entirely different instruments with unique equipment features.

Learning to play electric guitar requires:

  • Knowing how to use an amplifier and pedals that create sound effects
  • Understanding how to adjust the speaker connection
  • Knowledge of genres like rock, metal, blues, and jazz
  • Special techniques like power chords, palm muting, and string bending

Learning to play an acoustic guitar means you focus on classical, folk, country, pop, or blues music. A pick is optional in acoustic lessons, and you don't need amplifiers or cables. Acoustic teachers also place more emphasis on fingerpicking patterns.

I am an amateur classical and flamenco guitarist. I have been at this off and on since 1958. I was a student of Edward Freeman in Dallas, Texas. He was the only classically trained guitar teacher in North Texas from the early 1950s through the late 1960s. Interest in the classical guitar in the Dallas area picked up during the mid 1960s. Others learned and some learned to teach. Today, a half of a century later, there are numerous individuals around who claim to teach classical guitar. Some just claim, and some actually know what they're doing. John Rimmer is one who really does know how to teach classical guitar. He is a professional engineer, certified Texas secondary school teacher, and accomplished classical guitarist of about three decades experience. He has been teaching students of all ages classical guitar for two or more decades now. He taught me a great deal about the fine points of technique and practice. Through my association with Mr. Rimmer I have undertaken learning to play a number of pieces I never dreamt even trying to read through in earlier years. These include pieces from Gaspar Sanz's 1674 Suite Espanola. I have loved these wonderful baroque pieces all my life, but never thought I would ever be able to play them. Mr. Rimmer's encouragement and pedagogy made the difference. He can teach a seventy plus year old retiree like me. He can teach a youngster with excellent results. I recommend him heartily.
