Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
With new students; I like to assess the level of sewing they already possess. If absolutely no sewing experience - then we start from the very beginning, taking nothing for granted. Therefore I keep it plain and simple - easy to understand. My voice is calming - which takes all fear away! I'm patient and very hands on.
With students that have some knowledge of sewing - then I have a more pointed instruction approach.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My education in sewing started when I was a child at 7 years old. My mother was my teacher. (And she was a real school teacher!) Of course, Jr. High, High School and College all futhered my education. But truly, my BEST Education and Experience came from the hundreds of customers that I have had the honor of serving over my 20 plus years of sewing!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing varies depending on location and topic of sewing. My average cost is $50.00 per hour with a minimum of 2 hours. Within those two hours; you will have learned so much, your confidence would have increased and you will be ready for more!!!!
How did you get started teaching?
I guess I've always taught in one form or another. Many times I would come across someone who has fashion ideas they want to make or they want to sell have no idea on how to get started. I would just help. I'd end up teaching them how to do it. They were always grateful and told me that I made it very clear and simple for them.
When I attended college for Fashion Design and Merchandising - I already had sewing/designing skills that were learned and developed by my mother and other experienced Tailors that I met along the way. So, many students would come to me AFTER an instructor just explained (maybe not so clearly) what they should do and I would just clarify what the instructor intended to share and just give them a tidbit of information that I learned from pure experience. They would make comments - "You should be teaching". I guess that sunk in and I decided to open a sewing school to teach sewing.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with ALL types of students.
Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced, Special Needs. I've worked with groups; such as Girl Scouts, Church - Womens Group. Homeschoolers
I've worked with students who want to develop a fashion line and brand their name, I've worked with boutique owners who need their items manufactured locally.
My background is varied and diverse. I'm very skilled and creative.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I'm fond of the Ultimate Womens Expo that happens yearly here in Houston, TX.
I'm a sponsored vendor to give onsite sewing lessons at their Event held either at the NRG or at George R Brown Convention Center.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
There are so many teachers that sew extremely well. You can look at their garments and you're like, "WOW!" Can you teach me how to sew? There are alot that can sew, but they really cannot teach.
To teach, you must have a listening ear, a watchful eye, and patience to explain in a clear consise way for a student to learn. You must be aware of their personality and body language so you can disarm their anxiety, as all students are different and you may have various types in ONE class.
If you are looking for teacher, see if they paid attention to your question. Are they vague in their answer? If so, they will be vague in teaching.
Choose a teacher who answers your questions based on your knowledge? (If they are being super technical with the answer to impress you with the knowledge they have, I would be aware) To me, the answer was about them and not you the student.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
If you are a beginner let the instructor know that you do not know ANYTHING about the sewing machine.
If you have some sewing experience and are looking to develop more skills then make sure that the instructor meeting your expectation. Make sure the Instructor understands what you want to learn.
Ex. If you want to how to set in a sleeve. Well, the Instructor would tailor their session for that topic. However, if you want to learn what the advance buttons are on your sewing machine - then you need to be clear so the Instructor can help you.
Ask about their refund policy and make-up policy.
