About

Please note: I live in Washington State. So in-person lessons are here though I am available for online lessons anywhere - thank you!

Welcome! I have been teaching private brass lessons for 45 years. I have an unbroken 27 year streak of former students who have attended the #1 music school in the country - Indiana University. Yet, the goal of my lessons has never been to produce professional musicians - though I have many many professional musicians who have studied with me to my credit. The goal of my lessons is help students to realize their creative potential, to learn how to strategize, to problem-solve, and most importantly to find fulfillment in music. As it so happens... we have a lot of fun and many discoveries along the way! My background: a Bachelors, Masters, and Graduate Certificate in Performance from top ten schools of music; performance in three major orchestras in Israel and Italy; recording for radio, television, movies - I even once performed for the Pope! I have toured Europe, and am listed in six Who's Who organizations, including the Who's Who of American Teachers. Why don't you just visit my website to find out more about me: www.randallruback.com

I really enjoy my students and take a personal interest in each and every one of them. I think that young people, and adults too, are a lot of fun! Helping people to reach their personal best is a passion of mine. I have a mission and a passion to spread the word about what music can teach us about ourselves and help us to lead better lives - and my passion shows, so many students reach their potential in so many different ways. It's a journey, and I enjoy the process, and hope that you will too! See more at: www.randallruback.com

Randy has been my daughters teacher for two years. He is patient confident and so so full of experience and knowledge! The best part though is what a constant positive influence he has been in her life.

Id been looking for a private brass instructor for a three months. It was a real learning process. First I chose a teacher because he was a bit cheaper. Well, we paid for what we got. Music lessons are NOT like buying a sack of potatoes! Then I went with the teacher my son liked the most. Since when do children understand qualifications? Then we got smart. We chose the most qualified teacher on the block, in fact, probably anywhere. Tons of experience, fun for my son, and... its been well worth it! Two years later he is the youngest member of our local youth symphony. Chad benefited exponentially from Mr. Rubacks instruction. You could see and hear the difference from one lesson to the next! I highly recommend Mr. Ruback. Hes a wonderful man who takes a sincere interest in our sons happiness and we see tips Chads learned from tackling musical problems benefit all his other subjects. The best decision we ever made. Glad we took the time to finally get it right. Highest recommendation!

    Frequently asked questions

While I have definate ideas on what you need to know I always customize the lessons to the student's needs. This includes the student's readiness for the material, level of ability, maturity, learning strengths as well as areas that are challenging for them. Genuine progress takes time, and I so often joke right at the begining to help take the edge off of playing for a new instructor. I also really like to have fun at lessons! I want to make clear that I am here to help students - and so in this spirit everything is seen as an opportunity to learn, and there is never anything that they can do wrong because our mistakes are our greatest teachers! To me, learning is a journey, and I want it to be an enjoyable one!

Aside from studying with literally the Who's Who, the brass legends of the 20th Century (four members of the Chicago Symphony, two members of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, Sadler Wells Ballet, Indiana University, Northwestern University, and the list goes on...), I have augmented my training by decades of music festivals, master classes, and workshops with some of the world's greats on trombone, tuba (Arnold Jacobs), euphonium, French horn, and trumpet - I also have extensive training in music theory, music composition (I am a published and award-winning composer), and teach music fundamentals, music-reading. I believe in students becoming complete musicians. But my interests go far beyond music into philosophy, comparative religion, physics, psychology, literature, dance, and the visual arts. I have taught interdisciplinary courses in addition to standard classes and courses at colleges and universities. As a former professor, I simply enjoy doing my own thing now - without limitation. In short, I am a lifelong learner and a musician in the truest sense of the word.

I have two levels of pricing: one for 0nline and in-person lessons at my home, and a second pricing for in-person lessons at Kennelly Keys in Everett. In-person lessons are slightly higher.
It was 1980 and I was studying in New York at the Mannes College of Music (now the New School for Social Research) and was asked to teach for their preparatory division and accepted. My second teaching assignment (1984-1986) was at the Haifa Conservatory in Haifa Israel during my stay playing with the Haifa Symphony. And so on... teaching at colleges and universities, the US Army band, privately, the list goes on...
My youngest student was 5 years old and my oldest 92. I have worked with students who have tourette syndrome, autism, learning challenges, ADD, breathing and coordination challenges, below average, above average, and the highly gifted. I seek to find the individual path for every student. Learning the student's learning language is most important. Success is individual, though I have had great success placing students in some of the most prestigious music schools in the country. Many amateurs and hobbyists, post college and older adults have found welcome to my studio. In all cases I help as I can and we have fun in the process. Lessons will broader your view of music, and greater connection to life in general.
There are many ideas out there about how to play a brass instrument. Unfortunately many of these ideas are antiquated and don't agree with the actual physics of sound production. As a result students find themselves with intractable problems that need unraveling and the more they work on the problems the more their playing worsens. It's important to have a teacher who really understands how it all works so that they can learn to play their instruments more efficiently and effectively. I'm worth every dollar in terms of sparing you or your child's wasting hours upon hours of wasted practice.
Think about what your goals are? What prompted you to take lessons in the first place? Think about your questions for me? The questions are the beginning of the journey. Clarifying what you want out of lessons is extremely important and important for me to know.
