Please note: I live in Washington State. So in-person lessons are here though I am available for online lessons anywhere - thank you!
Welcome! I have been teaching private brass lessons for 45 years. I have an unbroken 27 year streak of former students who have attended the #1 music school in the country - Indiana University. Yet, the goal of my lessons has never been to produce professional musicians - though I have many many professional musicians who have studied with me to my credit. The goal of my lessons is help students to realize their creative potential, to learn how to strategize, to problem-solve, and most importantly to find fulfillment in music. As it so happens... we have a lot of fun and many discoveries along the way! My background: a Bachelors, Masters, and Graduate Certificate in Performance from top ten schools of music; performance in three major orchestras in Israel and Italy; recording for radio, television, movies - I even once performed for the Pope! I have toured Europe, and am listed in six Who's Who organizations, including the Who's Who of American Teachers. Why don't you just visit my website to find out more about me: www.randallruback.com
I really enjoy my students and take a personal interest in each and every one of them. I think that young people, and adults too, are a lot of fun! Helping people to reach their personal best is a passion of mine. I have a mission and a passion to spread the word about what music can teach us about ourselves and help us to lead better lives - and my passion shows, so many students reach their potential in so many different ways. It's a journey, and I enjoy the process, and hope that you will too! See more at: www.randallruback.com

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
While I have definate ideas on what you need to know I always customize the lessons to the student's needs. This includes the student's readiness for the material, level of ability, maturity, learning strengths as well as areas that are challenging for them. Genuine progress takes time, and I so often joke right at the begining to help take the edge off of playing for a new instructor. I also really like to have fun at lessons! I want to make clear that I am here to help students - and so in this spirit everything is seen as an opportunity to learn, and there is never anything that they can do wrong because our mistakes are our greatest teachers! To me, learning is a journey, and I want it to be an enjoyable one!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Aside from studying with literally the Who's Who, the brass legends of the 20th Century (four members of the Chicago Symphony, two members of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, Sadler Wells Ballet, Indiana University, Northwestern University, and the list goes on...), I have augmented my training by decades of music festivals, master classes, and workshops with some of the world's greats on trombone, tuba (Arnold Jacobs), euphonium, French horn, and trumpet - I also have extensive training in music theory, music composition (I am a published and award-winning composer), and teach music fundamentals, music-reading. I believe in students becoming complete musicians. But my interests go far beyond music into philosophy, comparative religion, physics, psychology, literature, dance, and the visual arts. I have taught interdisciplinary courses in addition to standard classes and courses at colleges and universities. As a former professor, I simply enjoy doing my own thing now - without limitation. In short, I am a lifelong learner and a musician in the truest sense of the word.
