Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For new students our first lessons are about getting to know where each student is at in their training, finding out what their goals and interests are, and then building a plan to suit each student's individual needs. Every student has different needs, goals, and aspirations, and it's my job to work with those, always with the goal of advancing toward improvement.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have performance degrees on both piano and clarinet, as well as a masters degree in music. I have 20 years of teaching experience, in a multitude of settings, from private lessons to university classroom teaching. I have taught piano, clarinet, music theory, music history, and helped run a musical theater program. I have worked with opers singers, orchestras, chamber music, and even been a karaoke pianist. I have extrensive experience in orchestration and concert managment. I bring all this experience to the table to meet the needs of each of my students, whether they want to play piano for fun, the clarinet to join an orchestra, a pianist to become an accompanist, or a music student looking to enter a university and become a professional musician.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge a non-refundable monthy tuition, due at the 1st of each month, based on lesson per week over 4 weeks. That means that from time to time we will have 5 lessons in the month or 3 lessons, but most often 4, depending on the calendar, but the price remains the same. This allows both you and I to create a monthly budget regardless of irregularities in the calendar. Tuition is due at the beginning of the month to act as an incentive for both you and I to be at every lesson. If time has taught me anything in that regard, consistent attendence to lessons is one of the best roads to success in learning. All that being said I am more than happy to be flexible and work with schedule conflicts and offer makeup lessons whenever appropriate.
