Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Every student starts out on my beginner horse, I talk about my teaching technique and determine their level of ability with a horse. The lesson is an hour long. It starts on the ground, learning to groom, saddle up, get on the horse, ring work, unsaddling, taking care of the horse after the lesson, putting tack away.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have owned horses for over 55 years. I have trained with some of the most renowned trainers in this country. I was an assistant trainer for 15 years prior to starting my own business 35 years ago. I have a boarding facility that has the capability of boarding 45 horses. My highest level of education is a Ph.D in Education from Middle Tennessee State University.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rate is $50/hour.
I do give military discounts, and if you board your horse at the facility I offer boarding and lesson packages.
How did you get started teaching?
I saw a need for teaching children to ride and have fun with horses. My barn is never about money, it always about giving back to the community to help people connect with horses.
What types of students have you worked with?
Children (starting at age 3), handicap (Down's syndrome, wheelchair bound), young adults, adults wanting to ride, therapy, children & adults wanting to show locally and the big circuits.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Try the trainer out for a lesson to make sure you "click". Everyone has a different style of teaching, make sure that is explained to you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should be able to tell their trainers anything, what they want to learn, their goals, fears, if their nervous, etc.
