Frequently asked questions

come see what I do.
A typical player will come in and go through a series of quick diagnostic tests. I will examine each player's skill level and athleticism and customize a game plan for them. Then each player can decide what we ultimately work on.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have played baseball since 1976. My dad played in the Dodgers system in the late 1940s; I played in the Padres system in the late 1980s/early '90s. My sister, Mary, was softball MVP of the Coast Conference at Monterey Peninsula College and works with softball players. I have been coaching baseball at some level every year since 1990. I worked for Santa Clara University, Point Pleasant Boro HS (NJ), Marlboro HS (NJ), Manasquan Brielle Little League 1997-2019. I have run camps, clinics, hosted talks and worked with leagues about improving their operational procedures.
My wife and I have raised 5 boys and 3 girls, and all of our children are/were baseball/softball players. One daughter and my wife as a coach were 2011 New Jersey State 11 YO Softball Champions; one son received a Division 1 baseball scholarship. Two sons are up and coming high schoolers looking to contiue their careers.
I have been a private baseball/softball instructor since 2002 when I started with CONDON'S in Manasquan, NJ.
My love for baseball was kindled during Little League in Pacific Grove, CA. I played there into high school and until graduation from Robert Louis Stevenson School in 1985. We enjoyed a little success at Stevenson and I was fortunate to receive an offer from Santa Clara University to continue playing. I worked hard there and parlayed that opportunity into a draft selection in 1989 and contract with the San Diego Padres . The Dream.

How did you get started teaching?
I felt there was a lack of qualified people coaching and the kids needed to learn the RIGHT way to play baseball/softball.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with Professional, College, high school and little leaguers. I welcome all boys and girls of all skill level and ages.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.
This summer I coached my son on a showcase team based in New Jersey. We went 33-7 on the summer and we won a few tournaments. Being able to watch the coming together of a team and the interactions between players is so enjoyable to me. The long drives the money the failures are all worth it when one of the players comes through with a timely hit, a big pitch or a solid play and I see that big smile. The journey has been fun with this paticular son since he was 5 and he is now 16.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Work with a teacher that understands what your skill level is and can articulate and communicate his/her ideas in a clear, concise manner. I usually look for someone I enjoy hanging out with while I'm working hard.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Be honest in your self evaluation so you are able to work freely. The better you understand your body and the more honest you are with yourself, the quicker your growth. So basically, as an athlete, know what you do well. Be coachable. Let coaches tell you what they think, then think about it yourself, sift through it; use what you like, and throw the rest out. And if you come to private instruction, you should probably be working at home on your own to compliment anything new being taught. Homework, like school.
