About

High-tech tools shorten the time it takes to learn and improve your game.

Why do I enjoy my work so much? Well, I only take on students that are serious about improving their games. There is no secret to the golf swing, but what I offer my students is the path to 'rapid-improvement.' There is nothing more satisfying than watching a player's handicap go into free-fall, or seeing someone with their first tournament. . . accomplishing something they never thought was possible!

My son started working with Tom after we spent much time conducting multiple interviews with multiple teaching professionals. Prior to that, my son had been with the same coach for five years.
Ive always thought fit between coach and athlete should be the most important hiring dimension when evaluating and making a decision.
Since starting instruction with Tom, my sons ball striking has improved which has resulted in less pressure on his short game and putting.
I appreciate his commitment to teaching and his passion for the game, ultimately enhancing the learning experience.

My young son is learning the fundamentals of golf. His golf game is improving to the point that he feels confident about playing in tournaments. His confidence in his game has grown and he is learning to make adjustments to his improving golf game. I attribute his learning strides to his hard work and instruction from Coach Nelson. if you want one one one instruction for your child and want to see results, give Tom a call.

Frequently asked questions

Although I have worked at four different golf courses, that experience did little to make me a better instructor. But during my high school and college playing days, I was blessed by being instructed by some legendary coaches. First, Don West was my high school coach. Don played is college golf at Western Washington University on the team with Ben Doyle (best known for coaching Bobby Clampett and being an early adopter of 'The Golf Machine' system). Don West was not only a top Armature, but he was a master of the mental game.

At Santa Clara University I was coached by Dick Schwindinger (also known for his coaching at San Jose State). Schwindinger was not only a master swing mechanic but one that understood the spiritual side of golf, or why golf 'is more than just a game.'

Don West and Dick Schwindinger formed the basis of my coaching method/system. But my experience only matured after studying some of the top No. CA players that I coached over the past 10 years.

My past student references include:

PGA/PGM Professionals: Anthony Del Dotto and Dylan Nevins

Aaron Beverly: 2017 Sac State Golfer and Athlete of the Year; 2017 Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Year

The main advice I give to all those looking for a golf professional is to interview them before you give them a dime of your hard earned money.

Some questions to ask when interviewing an instructor include:

- Who are the top players that recommend you as a golf instructor? Can I contact the references directly?

- What level of golf did you achieve? College, Professional Tour, etc.

- What is your specific method of teaching?

- What technologies do you use during your lessons? Golf Launch Monitor, iPAD/Smartphone, etc. What software do you utilize?

- How do you record and log a student's progress? Do you keep video swing history? What written logs are kept and how are they shared with the student?

- What is it that you specifically do as an instructor to enable a student to learn quicker than other instructors?
