About
Jenn & Justin specialize in AQHA and APHA show horses and offer a full service training program focusing on western pleasure, hunter under saddle, trail and all around.
We have several safe and well trained horses provided for lessons, haul ins are also welcome for tune ups and coaching. We teach ages 5 and up, and all levels-from beginners to advanced riders.
From colt starting to finished show horses, we cover all aspects of training for performance horses at our private facility.
Since 2007 our program has produced several World and Reserve World champion horses and riders. We enjoy coaching students of all ages and experience to be the best horsemen and women they can possibly be, while maintaining a fun and friendly atmosphere.
Being a riding instructor is so rewarding because of the difficulty and challenge of this sport. Unlike other sports, the object we are working with also has a heart and mind of its own. Not only does our job as coach give us the opportunity to teach riders the physical necessities to communicate properly with their horses, but we also get to act as "translators" and teach each rider how to really understand the mental aspects of working with horses. When you get to see that connection each rider makes it's really fun to be a part of.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
With new students, our first lesson will be more of an evaluation of the riders skills. We discuss strengths and weaknesses, where riders would like to improve and in what areas. We then set goals and structure future lessons to accommodate each riders needs and wants.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Both instructors at Wheeler Performance Horses have come from families with strong ties to the horse industry. We both grew up around horses, starting with 4H, then apprenticing for several reputable trainers across the country and then we eventually moved our way up into the AQHA and APHA competitive World level circuits. We understand the clients perspective as we were clients once too. We are both AQHA Professional Horsemen in good standing and intend to receive judging credentials in the future.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are $50 and usually run at least and hour. We end when the rider and horse have reached their best potential for that day.
How did you get started teaching?
We have both always enjoyed teaching others about horses as it has been such a huge passion in our family for generations. Anytime we can share our knowledge of the sport and the love for these special animals is a privileged opportunity.
What types of students have you worked with?
We work with first time riders, from as young as 3 to adults in their senior years. We also work with the serious, advanced riders looking to perfect their horsemanship, equitation and showmanship at the highest level. Any level rider at any age is welcome here.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Ask a lot of questions. Ask your community for feedback on trainers you're interested in working with. When finding a trainer, go see their facility and ask to sit in and watch a lesson to see if it's a good fit for you. Make sure the person you're looking into working with is good with communication and business, not just horses.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about setting short term and long term goals. You want to have small, achievable goals on a daily basis to receive the confidence needed for the bigger goals in the future. Also be open to discussing any fears or insecurities, riding instructors also are there to help with the mental challenges of this sport.
