I have been teaching golf for over 40 years. I have taught golf in many venues from golf camps, golf academies, golf centers, country clubs, high school golf coach, to even a major university. What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I always try to get acquainted with my student and to ask some questions about where they’re from and their golf game. We get started by warming up and hitting a few shots starting with an 8 iron. After seeing a few shots I know exactly what to do. I go right to the grip and set-up. From there, everything falls into place.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Although I am not a member of the P.G.A., I do have a BA degree in Physical Education plus a teaching credential. I was invited to teach with Billy Casper because I was a good instructor not because I was in the P.G.A.. In 1984, I gave a lesson to someone who came out to this area so his club pro could play in a club pro tournament. While he was playing he came and took a lesson from me and I’m the one who really helped him.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I usually charge 100 per person and I provide the balls. For 2 people I charge 150 and each person receives a full lesson lasting between 40-60 minutes, and hitting around 50 balls.
How did you get started teaching?
After high school, I moved to the Palm Desert area to attend College of the Desert, and to play on their golf team. While I was practicing I was introduced to a great teacher who took me under his wing. After college, I met another great teacher while working at Tamarisk C.C.. I was very grateful to have these wonderful instructors come into my life and help me to become the instructor I am today.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked in all types of venues with all types of people. From teaching junior golfers from all over the world to retired golfers.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
While teaching here at the College Golf Center here in Palm Desert, I met Bing Crosby’s nephew and gave him a lesson. He was so impressed that he invited me to a function at Thunderbird C.C., and said I was the best instructor he had ever had.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
A person should try and look at the instructors background. Where he has worked, his years of experience and what he plans to bring to the lesson. My students know that if they don’t get great results or they are not happy, they don’t pay a penny for the lesson.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should realize that they are going to have to make some changes. As for me, I do my best to answer any question a student may have or even the ones they aren’t even aware of.
