Jacob L. says, "Ryan was fantastic! I was looking for a teacher who could help me play more in tune, and one of the first things he suggested was playing duets together. He chose a duet that was perfect for my skill level (I’ve only been playing for about a year) and gave me a variety of exercises to improve my bow technique, form, and overall control. I can’t recommend him enough." Read more

I have been very fortunate to have worked for the last forty years with the top artists in the music industry, as a composer, musician or music producer. The process of teaching someone how to play the guitar is a learning experience for both of us with my very unique technic, you will be able to play a tune or start writing your own after a month for most beginners.

Your Classical Guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do classical guitar lessons cost near me?

Most classical guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for durations of 30 to 60 minutes. One-on-one lessons typically cost between $45 and $70 per hour, whereas group sessions are a more affordable option at $25 to $35 per class.

For those who prefer a digital classroom, online lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour. Monthly ongoing instruction costs $170 to $315 with a prepaid discount.

Why should I take classical guitar lessons?

You should take classical guitar lessons if you have an acoustic guitar and want to learn how to play classical concertos or Spanish-style music with fingerpicking.

Classical guitar lessons teach you how to:

  • Use nylon-string guitars and strum with the fingers instead of a pick
  • Develop your fingers to focus on complex fingerpicking techniques
  • Understand classical music theory and sight-reading

At what age should I start classical guitar lessons?

Children generally begin their classical guitar journey between the ages of 6 to 10, or as soon as they can hold the instrument well with enough hand strength to press the strings. Adults of all ages can master the instrument with the correct guidance and consistent practice.

How many classical guitar lessons do I need?

The number of weekly classical guitar lessons you need will depend on your personal goals and dedication to practice. A beginner might grasp a simple song within 2 to 6 months, but acquiring proficiency like a professional requires 4 to 10 years on average.

How do I find the best classical guitar lessons near me?

You can find proficient classical guitar tutors nearby by looking at the listings here on the Lessons platform. Sometimes teachers ara available through local music stores too.

Before hiring your tutor, always:

  • Obtain quotes from a minimum of 3 teachers and clarify what they teach.
  • Review feedback about them on Google and the Lessons site.
  • Request a reference list of their past students.
  • Ask fellow parents about their children's experiences with the tutor.
  • Secure a written agreement and schedule prior to the first session.
  • Make small initial payments to gauge the tutor's compatibility before committing to a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing a classical guitar teacher?

Ask these pertinent questions to help you pick a classical guitar teacher:

  • Did you study music formally, and what qualifications do you have?
  • How many years have you been teaching classical guitar?
  • Could I have a trial lesson to see if your teaching method works for me?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Which model of acoustic guitar should I purchase?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice is required?
  • What type of strings are best for beginners?
  • Which books should I buy for learning classical guitar?
  • Can you accommodate different learning styles?
  • What essentials should I bring to class, and how long is each session?
  • Can I have a written copy of our class schedule?
  • What is your policy for missed classes?
  • Am I allowed to suggest songs that I would like to learn?

I really liked how passionate he is about teaching. You could tell he really loves playing and teaching music. He is also very skilled in multiple instruments so he sometimes will play bass while I play the piece I just learned. That helped me understand how to play with a groove. I would choose Cullen over any shop guitar teacher any day.

Finding Saro was such a blessing. I came to Saro as a former music major myself, looking for beginner classical guitar lessons for my son (who had already been playing cello for 3.5 years with demonstrated musical ability). We interviewed instructors for about a month and finally found Saro....You could not ask for a more capable, kind, accommodating guitar teacher. Saro brings a wealth of not only technical but also cultural musical knowledge to each lesson. (In fact, when searching for a guitar teacher, it was Saro's impressive education and performance history, including a Masters in Classical Guitar from USC/Thornton, that set him apart from the slew of your typical rock/pop guitar teachers in the L.A. area). But as soon as we met Saro at our first lesson -- and encountered his welcoming cool smile -- we knew we made the right decision in both pedigree and personality. Saro is a super cool guy who teaches all ages. And he gels especially well with kids AND their parents. He is particularly wonderful and patient with our 10-year-old son, who can be somewhat shy to talk during lessons. Saro meets him where he can reach him and makes the lessons comfortable. He also allows we parents to sit in on the lessons, to learn alongside the student. This has great benefits for reinforcing concepts during practice time at home. All in all, Saro is generous and understanding in a way that is refreshing in a young, cool (very capable) teacher. Sign up with Saro if he still has space!

Brittany is so lovely. She’s positive, upbeat, and it’s clear that she loves what she does. I’m a bit shy and I have anxiety, and that’s why I wanted to take voice lessons. She made me feel at ease right away. I will continue lessons with Brittany indefinitely.
