Brandon S. says, "I took both guitar and singing lessons from Ed on and off for a number of years, both in person and remotely. I was an intermediate/advanced guitarist and a beginner/intermediate singer when I started lessons with him. I have had guitar or voice teachers here and there over the years, but Ed has been the most effective for me by far. I am most impressed with how quickly and easily Ed is able to zero in on very specific areas that need to be worked on to improve. He then always seems to have a useful practice technique to address the issue. This effectiveness combined with his easy going and laid back personality make lessons with him an absolute pleasure." Joseph S. says, "I started studying classical guitar 3 years prior to starting with Stephan, and my progress had stagnated. From the start with Stephan, however, it was clear that each lesson and each assigned exercise and piece had a purpose. Stephan's feedback and instruction during the lessons is clear, patient and constructive. I feel like I'm back to making significant progress in the last several months since I started studying with Stephan! And, we have established goals, so I'm always looking forward to what I'll be able to play in both the near and long term. I have only the highest recommendation for Stephan!!" Read more

Greetings! I am a student at Berklee College of Music majoring in Music Production. I am interested in sharing my knowledge and experience with passionate individuals who want to learn music & audio production and guitar performance. My teaching focuses on developing analytical and critical listening skills, navigating within the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), utilizing one's main instrument to produce high-quality music, and learning to play guitar. I began my musical journey at a guitar academy in South Korea, studying classical guitar. Upon successfully completing a six-year course, I picked up acoustic and electric guitar, desiring to

Lewis S. says, "I have studied Bulgarian and Macedonian style tambura (guitar-like folk instruments) with Bill Cope, off and on, for about 30 years. I have had private lessons in his home and I have been in group classes at various folk music and dance camps, most often the Mendocino Balkan Music and Dance Camp. For his classes at music camps Bill always arrives with charts prepared for both the students who can read music and with tablature for those students that cannot. He is careful to show how to care for the instrument and he is rigorous on showing the correct hand movement and positions unique to the folk style. He has planned out the sequence of skills necessary to start and improve one’s ability to play in the folk repertoire and style. When I have worked with him in a private setting he has been very generous with his time and talent to prepare notes for tunes I have requested and has also helped me find the chords for tunes I am learning. Bill’s repertoire includes material from simple folk songs for the beginner to advanced concert pieces for the virtuoso filled with the interesting ornaments that are characteristic of these styles. I have been present when Bill was accompanying performers and bands from Macedonia and Bulgaria and I have danced to the music of his own bands at performances and parties. " Read more

Your classical guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do classical guitar lessons cost near me?

Most classical guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for durations of 30 to 60 minutes. One-on-one lessons typically cost between $45 and $70 per hour, whereas group sessions are a more affordable option at $25 to $35 per class.

For those who prefer a digital classroom, online lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour. Monthly ongoing instruction costs $170 to $315 with a prepaid discount.

Why should I take classical guitar lessons?

You should take classical guitar lessons if you have an acoustic guitar and want to learn how to play classical concertos or Spanish-style music with fingerpicking.

Classical guitar lessons teach you how to:

  • Use nylon-string guitars and strum with the fingers instead of a pick
  • Develop your fingers to focus on complex fingerpicking techniques
  • Understand classical music theory and sight-reading

At what age should I start classical guitar lessons?

Children generally begin their classical guitar journey between the ages of 6 to 10, or as soon as they can hold the instrument well with enough hand strength to press the strings. Adults of all ages can master the instrument with the correct guidance and consistent practice.

How many classical guitar lessons do I need?

The number of weekly classical guitar lessons you need will depend on your personal goals and dedication to practice. A beginner might grasp a simple song within 2 to 6 months, but acquiring proficiency like a professional requires 4 to 10 years on average.

How do I find the best classical guitar lessons near me?

You can find proficient classical guitar tutors nearby by looking at the listings here on the Lessons platform. Sometimes teachers ara available through local music stores too.

Before hiring your tutor, always:

  • Obtain quotes from a minimum of 3 teachers and clarify what they teach.
  • Review feedback about them on Google and the Lessons site.
  • Request a reference list of their past students.
  • Ask fellow parents about their children's experiences with the tutor.
  • Secure a written agreement and schedule prior to the first session.
  • Make small initial payments to gauge the tutor's compatibility before committing to a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing a classical guitar teacher?

Ask these pertinent questions to help you pick a classical guitar teacher:

  • Did you study music formally, and what qualifications do you have?
  • How many years have you been teaching classical guitar?
  • Could I have a trial lesson to see if your teaching method works for me?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Which model of acoustic guitar should I purchase?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice is required?
  • What type of strings are best for beginners?
  • Which books should I buy for learning classical guitar?
  • Can you accommodate different learning styles?
  • What essentials should I bring to class, and how long is each session?
  • Can I have a written copy of our class schedule?
  • What is your policy for missed classes?
  • Am I allowed to suggest songs that I would like to learn?

Ed is super friendly, calm, and very knowledgeable. He knows how to tailor lessons to my skill level and interests, and I've made great progress in my singing and guitar playing over the past few years. You can tell how much he loves music, and he truly seems to enjoy sharing the gift of music with me. I always feel comfortable making mistakes given how supportive and encouraging he is. I'm really glad I've got Ed as a teacher!

Alison taught lessons to me and my kids. It was a lot of fun. She was great with the kids and provided me with challenging pieces. She is technically competent and has a really great relaxed teaching style.

I have worked with Bill in classes and one-on-one. The experience is always rewarding. I have been working on Macedonian Tambura - a guitar or lute-like instrument. I have heard Bill play multiple instruments in multiple bands; truly, too many to count. He is a master musician and a master of theory. His knowledge extends beyond playing music from all over the world, to knowing the background of that music and how it is constructed. Amazing practical knowledge, technical knowledge and teaching ability. I highly recommend Bill Cope.
