Your Classical Guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do classical guitar lessons cost near me?

Most classical guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for durations of 30 to 60 minutes. One-on-one lessons typically cost between $45 and $70 per hour, whereas group sessions are a more affordable option at $25 to $35 per class.

For those who prefer a digital classroom, online lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour. Monthly ongoing instruction costs $170 to $315 with a prepaid discount.

Why should I take classical guitar lessons?

You should take classical guitar lessons if you have an acoustic guitar and want to learn how to play classical concertos or Spanish-style music with fingerpicking.

Classical guitar lessons teach you how to:

  • Use nylon-string guitars and strum with the fingers instead of a pick
  • Develop your fingers to focus on complex fingerpicking techniques
  • Understand classical music theory and sight-reading

At what age should I start classical guitar lessons?

Children generally begin their classical guitar journey between the ages of 6 to 10, or as soon as they can hold the instrument well with enough hand strength to press the strings. Adults of all ages can master the instrument with the correct guidance and consistent practice.

How many classical guitar lessons do I need?

The number of weekly classical guitar lessons you need will depend on your personal goals and dedication to practice. A beginner might grasp a simple song within 2 to 6 months, but acquiring proficiency like a professional requires 4 to 10 years on average.

How do I find the best classical guitar lessons near me?

You can find proficient classical guitar tutors nearby by looking at the listings here on the Lessons platform. Sometimes teachers ara available through local music stores too.

Before hiring your tutor, always:

  • Obtain quotes from a minimum of 3 teachers and clarify what they teach.
  • Review feedback about them on Google and the Lessons site.
  • Request a reference list of their past students.
  • Ask fellow parents about their children's experiences with the tutor.
  • Secure a written agreement and schedule prior to the first session.
  • Make small initial payments to gauge the tutor's compatibility before committing to a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing a classical guitar teacher?

Ask these pertinent questions to help you pick a classical guitar teacher:

  • Did you study music formally, and what qualifications do you have?
  • How many years have you been teaching classical guitar?
  • Could I have a trial lesson to see if your teaching method works for me?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Which model of acoustic guitar should I purchase?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice is required?
  • What type of strings are best for beginners?
  • Which books should I buy for learning classical guitar?
  • Can you accommodate different learning styles?
  • What essentials should I bring to class, and how long is each session?
  • Can I have a written copy of our class schedule?
  • What is your policy for missed classes?
  • Am I allowed to suggest songs that I would like to learn?

Rig Castellanos is a musical magician! When I first picked up the guitar, I was completely clueless and didn't know where to start. But thanks to Rig's incredible teaching skills and boundless patience, he took me from zero to guitar hero in no time! His personalized approach to teaching ensured that every lesson was tailored to my individual needs and learning pace. What truly sets Rig apart is his genuine care and support beyond just teaching music. He has a knack for understanding life issues and offering insightful advice that goes beyond the fretboard. Rig isn't just a music teacher; he's a mentor and friend who has helped me navigate both musical and personal challenges. It’s difficult to describe in a few lines how was my experience having Tomati as a teacher. He is that kind of musician you rarely find around, knows a lot about theory, has a great technique, decades of experience; but above it all (or I might say, under it all), he can express himself with music as if it was his mother tongue. I had the chance to learn from him for about 1 year, during this time he was always challenging me to go further on my music development, but not in the normal way a teacher would do, I had always the feeling he was testing me all the time, when we were improvising over standards he frequently added different chord voices in the harmony to see if I could react to it, he somehow figured out very quickly how far he could go with me without de-motivating me, and I guess this kind of sensibility is what makes a great teacher. I definitely learned from him a lot about guitar playing, but he surely taught me more about music itself in one year than I’ve learned in decades of playing. Great musician, terrific teacher, beautiful human being!
