Victor G. says, "If you're looking for a guitar teacher who can truly transform your playing, look no further than Chris Peterson. I’ve been playing guitar since I was a kid, and while I had a decent grasp of a few pentatonic shapes, chords, and power chords, everything changed when I met Chris. In just a few months, I learned more than I had in the previous 25 years of self-teaching and short courses combined. Chris has a remarkable ability to break down complex concepts into manageable steps, covering everything from scales and arpeggios to music theory, all while keeping the lessons engaging and enjoyable. One of the standout aspects of Chris's teaching is his knack for building on the foundation I already had. Even the pentatonic scales I thought I knew became more refined and expressive under his guidance. His personalized approach not only improved my skills but also deepened my understanding of music. Though I’m currently taking a short break to finish a work project, I’m already looking forward to returning for more lessons. Chris is undoubtedly the best guitar teacher I’ve ever had, and I can’t recommend him highly enough. Thank you, Chris, for all your support and encouragement! Victor" Read more

Carlton H. says, "I just had the first lesson Due to the holidays. I was out of town. Al listens to what you want to achieve through your lessons and has a straightforward, sensible approach to teaching. He breaks it down very clearly for the types of music I am interested in learning on the Mandolin. For me it would be a good foundation in standard bluegrass and Irish tunes with learning how to improvise over a melody when sitting in with a jam session (should I put in the work to get that good). Al says he can get me there and I believe him. He is a professional musician and instructor with decades of experience and knowledge of the local music scene as well, which I can take advantage of since we live in the same community. Our first session was remote because I was sick after the holidays and he does very well using the technology effectively. " Read more

Your classical guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do classical guitar lessons cost near me?

Most classical guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for durations of 30 to 60 minutes. One-on-one lessons typically cost between $45 and $70 per hour, whereas group sessions are a more affordable option at $25 to $35 per class.

For those who prefer a digital classroom, online lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour. Monthly ongoing instruction costs $170 to $315 with a prepaid discount.

Why should I take classical guitar lessons?

You should take classical guitar lessons if you have an acoustic guitar and want to learn how to play classical concertos or Spanish-style music with fingerpicking.

Classical guitar lessons teach you how to:

  • Use nylon-string guitars and strum with the fingers instead of a pick
  • Develop your fingers to focus on complex fingerpicking techniques
  • Understand classical music theory and sight-reading

At what age should I start classical guitar lessons?

Children generally begin their classical guitar journey between the ages of 6 to 10, or as soon as they can hold the instrument well with enough hand strength to press the strings. Adults of all ages can master the instrument with the correct guidance and consistent practice.

How many classical guitar lessons do I need?

The number of weekly classical guitar lessons you need will depend on your personal goals and dedication to practice. A beginner might grasp a simple song within 2 to 6 months, but acquiring proficiency like a professional requires 4 to 10 years on average.

How do I find the best classical guitar lessons near me?

You can find proficient classical guitar tutors nearby by looking at the listings here on the Lessons platform. Sometimes teachers ara available through local music stores too.

Before hiring your tutor, always:

  • Obtain quotes from a minimum of 3 teachers and clarify what they teach.
  • Review feedback about them on Google and the Lessons site.
  • Request a reference list of their past students.
  • Ask fellow parents about their children's experiences with the tutor.
  • Secure a written agreement and schedule prior to the first session.
  • Make small initial payments to gauge the tutor's compatibility before committing to a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing a classical guitar teacher?

Ask these pertinent questions to help you pick a classical guitar teacher:

  • Did you study music formally, and what qualifications do you have?
  • How many years have you been teaching classical guitar?
  • Could I have a trial lesson to see if your teaching method works for me?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Which model of acoustic guitar should I purchase?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice is required?
  • What type of strings are best for beginners?
  • Which books should I buy for learning classical guitar?
  • Can you accommodate different learning styles?
  • What essentials should I bring to class, and how long is each session?
  • Can I have a written copy of our class schedule?
  • What is your policy for missed classes?
  • Am I allowed to suggest songs that I would like to learn?

I live in South Carolina and have been Al's student since last March. I can't begin to say enough about how much Al has helped me progress in my playing. As said before, not only does he teach you how to play but he gives you an understanding of how the music works. When I first talked to Al about taking lessons, I told him that my goal was to be a recreational player and maybe play some in church once in a while. Now I am in a band and we just finished playing a show this morning at a local church. It is amazing how far you can take this instrument with the right instruction and help. I could have spent the next 5 years trying to learn to play on my own and would probably still be playing Cripple Creek and Cumberland Gap. Now I have a song list so long I can't begin to list them all. If you are looking for lessons that are challenging but well worth the work, you can't go wrong with Al.

Im Caleb’s student. He teaches me drums and, I like the way he teaches things. He never makes me feel rushed and he takes the classes slow and smooth. Sometimes he even likes to challenge me a bit but he never makes it hard to the point where I wanna stop playing drums. He makes me feel so confident where I'm now playing in school chapel. Overall he is the best teacher you could get for ANY instrument.
