HLL says, "I have had many dance instructors in my life, but never have I come across one who is genuinely passionate in teaching and in bringing out the best dancing skills in his students. I have been dancing with Aleks for nearly 5 years. Ever since we formed our Pro/Am dance partnership, we have competed at competitions, performed at showcases/events and worked collectively with world renowned dance coaches. It is such a joy, privilege and honor to dance with him! Many dance instructors can teach the mechanics of dancing. Many people are satisfied with just knowing the mechanics. To take your dancing to the artist level you need someone that is more than just a dance teacher. I have found such a person—Aleks. He has not only taken my dancing to a higher level but he has helped me redefine my purpose in dancing. When I first met Aleks, I knew that he was a rare find. I also knew that his knowledge, experience, and skills would provide me with a solid foundation for ballroom dancing. Within a short period of time of taking private lessons with Aleks, I was able to see my progress and my potential as a dancer. Aleks kept pushing me beyond my limits—limits which would not have been achievable with other instructors. Aleks is a very talented dancer and instructor, who has a very solid background in dance training and performance. Not only does he instill the love of dancing in all of his students, he has a wonderful way of relating to his students of all ages and levels. He explains things in a way that is easy to understand and he listens well. He is such an inspiring teacher who has great respect for all of his students. He is compassionate, caring and he goes the extra mile. When I am on the dance floor with Aleks, I feel like I am on the show “Dancing With The Stars”! Anyone who can experience the joy of learning from and dancing with Aleks is very lucky. I am very proud to be his student. Thank you Aleks for the confidence and for my growth on the dance floor that you have bestowed upon me! H.L.L." Read more

I lived, trained and competed in acrobatic swing, boogie woogie and Lindy hop, and later on in Latin social dances (salsa, bachata). Your Ballet Classes questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are ballet classes?

Ballet classes cost $60 to $200+ per month, depending on the studio location, reputation, and the number of classes per week. One class per week typically costs $60 to $70 per month, while the monthly rate for an unlimited class pass is $150 to $250. At many studios, you'll also pay a $25 to $50 non-refundable registration fee.

  • Ballet studios often offer the first class for free to help you decide if you want to register for a full season.
  • Some ballet studios offer a discount when paying in full for the entire season or when registering siblings or more than one child.
  • Private ballet classes cost $50 to $85 per hour on average.

What is ballet?

Classical ballet is a theatrical form of dance using slow, formal body movement techniques, music, and often scenery to tell a story or express a concept or emotion. Contemporary ballet dancing combines classical ballet with ethnic, jazz, and modern dance styles, incorporating faster movements, floor work, and often bare feet instead of ballet shoes.

How long is a ballet class?

While class lengths vary by dance studio, traditional ballet classes typically last 90 minutes, with the first 30 to 45 minutes spent at the barre to warm up the body and the second part of the class focusing on center work.

At what age can you start ballet classes?

Formal ballet classes typically start around age 7 or 8, but many studios offer "pre-ballet" classes for ages 4 to 6, combining games with ballet techniques and steps to create a fun class that helps the child learn some basics while also developing their ability to working together in a group class setting. Some dance studios even offer "baby ballet" or "mommy and me" classes for children as young as 2 or 3 years old.

Can adults take ballet classes?

Yes! You can start taking ballet classes at any age. Most studios offer ballet classes for teens and adults. Learning ballet as an adult offers many benefits, such as developing good posture, physical coordination, mental focus, mental and physical flexibility, self-confidence, and social skills.

What should you wear to a ballet class?

Most ballet studios recommend wearing flexible fabric that hugs tight to the body so your movement is not restricted, and the teacher can clearly see the moves you are making. Traditional ballet studios often require a black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers for female attire and black tights, dance pants, or dance shorts with a fitted white T-shirt and black ballet shoes for males. Every dance studio has its own guidelines for dance class attire, so be sure to confirm the clothing requirements with your ballet studio before your first class.

How do I choose the best ballet class?

When searching for ballet classes near you, be sure to:

  • Look for a licensed and insured ballet studio that has been in business for 5+ years.
  • Check out their reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Review their website for scheduling information and photos or videos.
  • Read all contract terms before signing.

What questions should I ask when searching for ballet classes near me?

Consider asking the following questions to help you choose a ballet studio:

  • Do you offer classes for an absolute beginner?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • Do I need to register?
  • Do you offer drop-in classes?
  • Can I join a class that has already started?
  • What is your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have any package deals or new student offers?
  • Do you offer private lessons?
  • What forms of payment do you take?
  • Do I need to pay in advance?
  • What type of clothing should I wear to class?
  • What shoes should I wear?
  • Will there be a recital?

I have been taking private salsa lessons with Dora for about 2 months. Prior to this, I had zero background with salsa, and had never tried it because I was a little self conscious about going out and taking a group class without any experience. After two months with Dora, I feel confident that I could go in a group or social dance setting and look like I know what I am doing with the basics of salsa. Again, this is with absolutely zero experience prior to my first lesson with her, so I think this says a lot about her ability to teach and build confidence . Dora is a great choice for a teacher if you are someone like me and maybe a little unsure of whether you could really learn this well enough to go out in a social setting. Dora has made the lessons fun, but more importantly she has taken a genuine interest in making sure I am actually learning what I need to know to be able to go out in a social setting and be confident with this.

Alisa is the best yoga instructor I’ve ever taken a class with. She brings a ton of positivity and excitement into the practice. She always has suggestions on how to do a pose that works for you, I am not the most flexible but she always found a way to help make things work. After every class I would walk away in a state of zen with a huge smile on my face. Alisa has so much to offer as she truly cares about all of her students and helping them achieve their goals both physically and spiritually. I can honestly say she makes showing up to do yoga everyday very enjoyable. If you have the chance to take a class with her I highly recommend you do as I guarantee she will quickly become your favorite go to instructor. An abundance of smiles, laughs, spiritual growth, and increased flexibility await =]
