Sitong Z. says, "I have been taking guitar lessons with Grey for a year now, and I would recommend him to anyone, either a beginner trying to get started with guitar or an experienced player looking to improve and refine their playing. He has a very professional set of teaching approach and always comes up with practical advice in theory, techniques, ear training, etc. He is a great teacher, an amazing guitar player, and overall just an awesome person to chat with." Dave G. says, "I am a student of Bob Wolfman at Wolfman's School of Music. I also brought the 10 Week Guitar Course for Beginners. I have found Bob to be a very knowledgeable teacher. I like how his  teaching style blends what I would consider formal musical training (reading sheet music, music theory, learning scales, etc.) with practical applications of the topics (learning licks and encouraging improvisation). On a personal level, he pushed me to maintain motivation, foster improvement, and push myself to learn more and train harder. In regards to the 10 Week Guitar Course for Beginners, I have learned more from this introductory course than I have in years of casual playing. I was happily surprised to find the course contains both guitar specific information and fundamental music theory (e.g circle of fifths, chord construction theory, chord progressions). I'm finding that the theory aspect is applicable to other instruments as well. I never thought an intro guitar course would have information that was applicable to, say, the piano" Read more

Charlie B. says, "I have been a classical guitar student of Bill's for the past 6 months. In retirement, I have decided to take what was an "off and on" affair with the classical guitar (I'm not a beginner) and, instead, commit the necessary time and energy to truly learning the instrument. These have been my first serious classical guitar lessons. Prior to these lessons, I was entirely "self-taught" which means I created a whole bunch of bad habits for myself and was not progressing at all. Bill refers to me as a "remedial" student which I think is a perfect description of my playing. Through Bill, I have learned proper technique which, in turn, has improved my tonality and musicality with the classical guitar. Bill has identified my bad habits, broken them down, shown the proper way to overcome them and makes sure I don't "back-slide" into my bad habits again. Bill paces the lessons according to ability, not covering material that's too advanced while still ensuring that the lesson is challenging. In each lesson, Bill is positive, encouraging yet kindly critical so that I know I am making progress yet always aware of what areas I need to work on. Bill has the right "make-up" for a teacher and I am pleased, and without reservation, to give Bill a 5 star rating. " Read more

Your blues guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do blues guitar lessons cost near me?

Blues guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session and last anywhere from half an hour to an hour. Private classes cost $45 to $70 per hour. For those who prefer camaraderie, group lessons cost $25 to $35 per session.

  • For committed learners, a monthly plan of ongoing lessons costs $170 to $315.
  • Alternatively, virtual lessons are available for$35 to $55 per hour, making musical education accessible to all.

Are blues guitar lessons worth it?

Blues guitar lessons are worth it to play blues guitar because the structured and custom-tailored teaching approach accelerates progress while enhancing technique. Self-learning, while possible, is a longer road laden with the risk of cultivating bad habits.

A blues guitar teacher will show you the essentials like:

  • How to emphasize playing on expressively
  • Ways to get confident improvising with a jazz band
  • Mastering the 12-bar blues progression and blues scales
  • Learning unique techniques like string bending, slides, and vibrato

What age is best to start blues guitar lessons?

Children can start blues guitar lessons between the ages of 6 to 10 years old at the earliest. The best time is whenever they can hold the instrument easily and have the hand strength to press on the strings.

Adults of all ages can learn to play blues guitar with the right instruction and regular practice.

How many blues guitar lessons do I need?

The number of blues guitar lessons you need all depends on what you're aiming for and how long you practice. Beginners typically learn how to play a simple song in 2 to 6 months on average. However, mastering blues guitar takes at least 4 to 10 years.

How do I find the best blues guitar lessons near me?

If you want to find the best blues guitar lessons for you, then look at teachers nearby on the Lessons website. You can also check out guitar lessons at your local music shops. Before you choose a guitar teacher, remember to do these things:

  • Check prices from 3 different teachers and ask what they'll teach you.
  • Read what others said about them on Google and on the Lessons website.
  • Ask for a list of other people they've taught to see if they're good.
  • For kids, ask other moms and dads what their kids say about the teacher.
  • Get a plan on paper about when your lessons will be before you start.
  • Pay a little at first to see if you like the teacher before you pay for a whole month.

What questions do I ask when choosing a blues guitar teacher?

To find the best guitar teacher, you could ask these questions:

  • What type of music degree do you have?
  • How long have you been teaching blues guitar?
  • Can I have one lesson for free to see how I like it?
  • What are the ages of most of your students?
  • Which kind of blues guitar and equipment should I buy to practice with?
  • Will you give me some finger patterns to practice at home?
  • How much should I practice at home between lessons?
  • What books should I get, and do you know where I could find used ones?
  • How many different blues guitar techniques can you teach?
  • If I'm struggling with learning, can you change the way you teach me?
  • What should I bring to class, and how long is each lesson?
  • Can I have a copy of our class plan, agreement, and how much it costs?
  • If I have an urgent problem and need to cancel, what happens?
  • Can I choose some songs that I want to learn?

Reviews for Boston blues guitar lessons

I've been taking guitar lessons with Grey for exactly 2 months and I'm thrilled with my experience and progress. I tried, in vain, to learn guitar on my own for several years and finally decided to take a different approach. After our lessons together, I can play many songs I've always wanted to learn. Grey customizes each lesson based on your learning goals. He identifies your weaknesses and develops a plan to strengthen them. I feel fortunate to have an instructor like Grey who is knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. Whether you're a beginner like me or more proficient, I cannot recommend Grey highly enough. I left a review for Bob Wolfman on another site after I'd been taking lessons from him for a few months. Now a year later, my knowledge of theory, chord substitutions, jazz standards and jazz guitarists continues to grow. I am increasingly able to apply the theory Bob has walked me through lesson by lesson. Each time we play together, he has practical cues that help me improve my musical expression. As I said in my first review: "He knows what concepts and techniques I need to learn, he knows the order they need to be learned, and he has years of experience guiding guitarists using the most effective resources. Because I am convinced Bob has me on the right path, I am practicing more than I ever have before, enjoying both the challenges and the successes along the way. ... If you are willing to put your faith in Bob and put in the work, he can take your guitar playing to a new level".

I started lessons with Bill to learn classical guitar after 5 years of self-taught electric and steel string acoustic playing. My playing has improved immensely since I started working with him. Not only has he introduced me to classical guitar but he has taught me how to effectively practice to constantly improve. Bill has a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw upon and I cannot say enough good things. A++
