About
SHF offers affordable riding lessons on safe horses. Over 30 years experience with horses and riders of all ages and abilities. I have had countless horses and riders show and win at local, regional and world levels, as well as state high point championships. The bond between a horse and rider can be the best friendship imaginable and I enjoy being part of that. I love my job and the joy it brings to people. I love seeing the look on a riders face when it "clicks" between them and their horse. It's so gratifying to bring a rider to their dreams and goals.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When a new rider starts at SHF I work closely to make sure they are comfortable with and around the horses. I ask about their past experiences with horses to make sure they are on the most suitable horse for their skill level. I want this to be a safe, fun and rewarding experience for each person.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been riding for over 35 years and teaching for over 30. I have worked alongside some of the best trainers in New England and still attend forums and clinics to improve my education and abilities.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are $50 for a half hour lesson..
How did you get started teaching?
I started giving lessons to local kids and when I saw how much they loved it I knew it was something I always wanted to do.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught riders as young as 3, adults of all ages and some special needs riders. Many of my students have won regional and state titles. I've taught riders who just love horses and want to enjoy them casually and I've taught the most serious competitors.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a 3 year old girl show at the Deerfield Fair in 2019 and in the line up she saw me petting the horse. She put both her reins in one of her tiny hands so she could reach down and pet the horse. She sat back up, collected her reins and looked at me and said " I like this'. It melted my heart and made me realize how special the bond of a girl and a horse really is.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find an instructor that you click with. You will build a relationship with your instructor and you want to be comfortable with him or her. Make sure they are teaching on safe horses and that they can help you reach any goals you have.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How available are you for your lessons? Your instructor can only guide you as much as you want to learn. You not only need to be physically "available" for your lessons but you also need to be there mentally.
Think about your goals, long or short term, and make a plan to get there. Your instructor can help you reach your goals but needs to be aware of them.
Don't overthink anything, just enjoy this and you will have a lifetime of memories to cherish.
