Daniel H. says, "Mike is a very nice guy, easy to get along with and a true master of his craft. My only mild complaint is that he knows so much that his default level of expectation for newbies (like me) is a little high. That being said, I was thrilled to have worked with him and look forward to working with him again when circumstances allow." Read more

"When you take lessons with Tony, you're not just taught chords so you can play a Van Halen or a Nirvana riff. You're taught the fundamentals in a way that you become familiar, almost in tune with your guitar. If you find any other knucklehead that can do that, I'll pay for your lessons. Actually, I won't, but you should take lessons with Tony anyway. He's that good." - Jessica Green "Tony kicks the most ass of any guitar teacher out there. He is patient and encouraging, but in no time will have you playing things you didn't think you could play. He will give you a good music foundation while letting you learn the music you like the most. If...

Your Electric Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do electric guitar lessons cost near me?

Electric guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session with lengths of 30 to 60 minutes each. Private tuition costs $45 to $70 per hour, while group sessions are more wallet-friendly at $25 to $35 per class.

  • For ongoing classes, you'll pay $170 to $315 per month with the prepaid discount.
  • Online lessons cost anywhere from $35 to $55 per hour and let you jam with a teacher from the comfort of your own home.

Are electric guitar lessons worth it?

Electric guitar lessons are worth it if you want to learn more at a faster pace, develop a better technique, and get customized instructions to improve your style. Only an experienced electric guitar player can understand how to help you improve, so don't settle for a general guitar instructor.

What age is good to start electric guitar lessons?

A good age for kids to start electric guitar lessons is from 6 to 10 years old. Another indication they're ready to learn is whenever they're physically able to hold the guitar and have the hand strength to press the strings.

Adults of all ages can also start electric guitar lessons at any time. With the right guidance and consistent practice, anyone can master the electric guitar.

How many lessons does it take to learn electric guitar?

The number of lessons it takes you to learn electric guitar depends on your goals and how much time you dedicate to practicing those epic solos. Playing a simple tune might take 2 to 6 months of weekly classes.

If you're aiming to rock out like a pro, expect a time investment of 4 to 10 years.

Are acoustic and electric guitar lessons the same?

Acoustic and electric guitar lessons aren't the same because these are two entirely different instruments with unique equipment features.

Learning to play electric guitar requires:

  • Knowing how to use an amplifier and pedals that create sound effects
  • Understanding how to adjust the speaker connection
  • Knowledge of genres like rock, metal, blues, and jazz
  • Special techniques like power chords, palm muting, and string bending

Learning to play an acoustic guitar means you focus on classical, folk, country, pop, or blues music. A pick is optional in acoustic lessons, and you don't need amplifiers or cables. Acoustic teachers also place more emphasis on fingerpicking patterns.

How do I find the best electric guitar lessons near me?

You can find the best electric guitar lessons nearby to suit your needs by checking out our teacher listings her on the Lessons website. Your local music stores are also great places to start when scouting for the best guitar instructors.

Before making a decision, you should:

  • Compare prices from 3 different teachers and ask what their lessons include.
  • Check out their reviews on Google and Lessons.
  • Request for a references list of past students to verify their track record.
  • Ask for opinions from other parents on what their kids think of the teacher.
  • Obtain a written schedule and contract before the first lesson.
  • Pay for a couple of sessions to see what you think before fully committing to a month's worth of lessons.

What questions do I ask when choosing an electric guitar teacher?

Ask potential electric guitar teacher these questions before hiring:

  • Did you study music in school, and what qualifications did you earn?
  • How long have you been teaching electric guitar?
  • Can I sample a lesson to gauge if your teaching style suits me?
  • What's the average age of your students?
  • What type of electric guitar would you recommend for me?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice should I put in?
  • What resources or books would you recommend for learning electric guitar?
  • Can you adapt your teaching methodology if I'm struggling with a concept?
  • What should I bring to class, and how long does each session last?
  • Could I get a copy of our timetable and contract terms?
  • What's your policy regarding missed classes due to unforeseen circumstances?
  • Can I choose some songs that I'd love to learn?

I've been taking guitar lessons with Grey for exactly 2 months and I'm thrilled with my experience and progress. I tried, in vain, to learn guitar on my own for several years and finally decided to take a different approach. After our lessons together, I can play many songs I've always wanted to learn. Grey customizes each lesson based on your learning goals. He identifies your weaknesses and develops a plan to strengthen them. I feel fortunate to have an instructor like Grey who is knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. Whether you're a beginner like me or more proficient, I cannot recommend Grey highly enough. Bob's gifted talent and vast experience is impressive, his love of music and desire to share his passion is inspiring. Open communication is key, Bob welcomes your questions, he feels that no questions are silly or stupid, especially if you're new at this! He wants your feedback and encourages dialog to make your lessons meaningful and the best for you!” Mary G

What I like most about Russell is that he is such an enthusiast and encyclopedic savant of modern and classic folk, rock, blues and country. If he doesn't know the song from memory, he'll fire it up on his phone and figure it out in real time. And he readily adjusts to what you want and need. If you just want a partner to play with, that's fine with him. If you want to go deep on music theory, he's there for you as well.

Varis taught both of my boys piano (first instrument) and then continued to teach one of my sons guitar. He instilled a love for music which has had a lasting effect. He's a talented musician himself which was inspiring for my sons. He's also super accessible and works with each student based on their music interests and skills/needs for development. Having the lessons at home was extremely convenient given our hectic schedules, and Varis was always super flexible if we needed to make a scheduling shift. My only "constructive criticism" is that with only half an hour for a lesson, I wish more time was spent on things that couldn't be done without Varis there (i.e. warming up, looking up online resources, etc.) Overall very happy!

I started lessons with Bill to learn classical guitar after 5 years of self-taught electric and steel string acoustic playing. My playing has improved immensely since I started working with him. Not only has he introduced me to classical guitar but he has taught me how to effectively practice to constantly improve. Bill has a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw upon and I cannot say enough good things. A++
