Benjamin Y. says, "Amir is an excellent teacher and musician! He cares deeply about my progress, and goes out of his way to make sure I have the resources I need to succeed. I’ve been taking lessons from him for more than a year, and because of his instruction, have progressed so much more than I ever thought I’d be able to. In particular, as the pandemic has forced distance learning upon most people, he has made a great effort to make online lessons not only effective, but enjoyable, and I can absolutely say he has succeeded at both!" Krysti C. says, "I have been going to guitar lessons with Dirk for over a year now. I tried guitar lessons once before -- and the instructor and I just didn't "click". I am a 38-year old woman, who loves to sing and have always wanted a way to accompany myself -- I love cheesy music (read: boring ballads) and have zero aspirations of being a rock star (although I have played at one open mic). Dirk has been the perfect instructor for me -- he is the right balance of helping you find inspiration in songs that you actually enjoy and also providing structure and exercises to increase your playing ability. He is fun, and patient, and supportive! He always has suggestions for songs that I may like -- and he's usually spot on! I'll also surprise him with songs that I want to try in lessons -- and he'll sit there and work them out with me on the spot. He's also been super patient with me -- as an adult learner, guitar obviously isn't my primary focus. Life gets in the way sometimes -- and Dirk has never once pushed. He has gently reminded me of my guitar goals in a way that is exactly what I need to get me on track when I have been distracted (sometimes missing 1-2 months of lessons). I drive 45 minutes from Arlington, VA to guitar lessons -- and I ALWAYS look forward to it (even when I'm embarrassed if I haven't practiced as much as I should have)! His joy for the instrument and music in general is infectious. If you want to pick up the guitar, definitely give Dirk a shot -- he's absolutely wonderful!" Read more

Ben L. says, "Blues isn't something you "learn," but must "experience." Of all forms of music - rock, pop, folks, jazz - blues requires more musical "phrasing" and self-awareness. It's part of you, the musician, not something that is independent of you. I mention this because John embodies the genuine Blues. If you want to learn guitar and the Blues, John can do (like so many other teacher)... but what distinguishes John is he will guide your inner musicianship to externally manifest - for me, through my guitar. In short, John is better than advertised and highly recommend him for anyone who seeks music to be part of his/her life." Read more

Your classical guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do classical guitar lessons cost near me?

Most classical guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for durations of 30 to 60 minutes. One-on-one lessons typically cost between $45 and $70 per hour, whereas group sessions are a more affordable option at $25 to $35 per class.

For those who prefer a digital classroom, online lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour. Monthly ongoing instruction costs $170 to $315 with a prepaid discount.

Why should I take classical guitar lessons?

You should take classical guitar lessons if you have an acoustic guitar and want to learn how to play classical concertos or Spanish-style music with fingerpicking.

Classical guitar lessons teach you how to:

  • Use nylon-string guitars and strum with the fingers instead of a pick
  • Develop your fingers to focus on complex fingerpicking techniques
  • Understand classical music theory and sight-reading

At what age should I start classical guitar lessons?

Children generally begin their classical guitar journey between the ages of 6 to 10, or as soon as they can hold the instrument well with enough hand strength to press the strings. Adults of all ages can master the instrument with the correct guidance and consistent practice.

How many classical guitar lessons do I need?

The number of weekly classical guitar lessons you need will depend on your personal goals and dedication to practice. A beginner might grasp a simple song within 2 to 6 months, but acquiring proficiency like a professional requires 4 to 10 years on average.

How do I find the best classical guitar lessons near me?

You can find proficient classical guitar tutors nearby by looking at the listings here on the Lessons platform. Sometimes teachers ara available through local music stores too.

Before hiring your tutor, always:

  • Obtain quotes from a minimum of 3 teachers and clarify what they teach.
  • Review feedback about them on Google and the Lessons site.
  • Request a reference list of their past students.
  • Ask fellow parents about their children's experiences with the tutor.
  • Secure a written agreement and schedule prior to the first session.
  • Make small initial payments to gauge the tutor's compatibility before committing to a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing a classical guitar teacher?

Ask these pertinent questions to help you pick a classical guitar teacher:

  • Did you study music formally, and what qualifications do you have?
  • How many years have you been teaching classical guitar?
  • Could I have a trial lesson to see if your teaching method works for me?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Which model of acoustic guitar should I purchase?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice is required?
  • What type of strings are best for beginners?
  • Which books should I buy for learning classical guitar?
  • Can you accommodate different learning styles?
  • What essentials should I bring to class, and how long is each session?
  • Can I have a written copy of our class schedule?
  • What is your policy for missed classes?
  • Am I allowed to suggest songs that I would like to learn?

Reviews for Gaithersburg classical guitar lessons

Recent success stories from people in the Gaithersburg area.
Connor M.
Steve has played a tremendous role in the progress I've made as a guitar player. Lessons with him are enjoyable, rewarding, and low stress. He is a good listener; he pays attention to my playing and my questions, and provides valuable feedback. The work he gives me between lessons is always challenging, but reasonable, keeping me motivated and keeping the momentum going on improving my technique and musicality. He plays beautifully and seems to genuinely enjoy discussing all things related to music and the guitar.

Mr. Amir is kind, supportive, conscientious, patient and calm, even when our 7 year old loses his cool or our 3 year old stages a distraction.
