D.F. says, "During elementary school, my kids took art lessons from Julie, sometimes after school & every summer in one of her art camps. They learned a variety of techniques & learned to express themselves through art. Both of them have continued with art in their adult lives: one in her career and the other as a hobby. Julie gave them both a great foundation, & they always had fun! I highly recommend Julie as an art teacher! " Read more

Adrian J. says, "Hello! This is Adrian Jimenez and my friend Bassie was my guitar instructor. Guitar is an instrument I been wanting to learn for a while, and when I found out Bassie was a guitarist, I wanted him to instruct me. The main thing I appreciated bout Bassie was his patience while teaching me. Considering I only did half hour lessons, he would find different methods to teach me how to remember each string, like using (E)very (B)oy (G)ets (D)inner (A)t (E)ight. He also showed me different strumming methods by providing real life examples what it’s like to strum, the motion your hand should do that is. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time needed at times to attend some lessons but when he postponed with me, we were still able to pick up where we left off and I liked seeing his reaction of me still getting the chords and strumming correctly after postponing. When I get the chance, I’ll definitely go back to taking lessons with Bassie to continue learning to play the guitar." Read more

Working with clay can be a healing process. The earth takes away negative energy and transmutes it into light and creativity. Building a relationship with the clay opens all of the doors. I enjoy every bit of the process. Working with the elements to create a lasting work of art that will outlive any of us today is humbling experience.

Your Painting Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do painting classes cost?

Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.

Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.

How long are painting classes?

Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.

What kind of painting class is best for beginners?

Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.

Where can I take painting classes?

You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.

What do I bring to painting classes?

Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Easel
  • Canvas
  • Apron

  • Do you allow walk-ins?
  • What type of paint would you recommend for my experience level?
  • What's your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have an age requirement?
  • How long are your classes?
  • Can I take my work home after class, or does it need to stay here to dry?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

Jared B.
Israel is very patient and encouraging! I started out not feeling confident in my work and he kept walking through it and by the end of the class I had drawn my first proportional mannequin! I was amazed at what I was able to accomplish. Israel's instructions are very detailed and he does a great job of helping beginners and explaining the goals we have set for ourselves. I definitely recommend him!
