Seeing the light bulb go on with either horse or rider, hopefully both, when they can communicate and get the best from each other's athletic performance.
Having over 30 years as a pro, I've now seen many of my students go on from state award winners to become coaches and professionals themselves. Many come back with their kids to get started the right way:)
Horses started here have gone on to be featured in magazines like Chronicle of the Horse and Practical Horseman as they have been the winningest horses in our sport. Nice to know we saw their talents and honed their original skills to help them on their journey to success.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
There needs to be a real program. Riding and Training are a real sport, and more complicated by the fact the horse is a living partner. Find someone that has book knowledge as well as practical experience teaching, riding and training, as well as great horsemanship.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your goals, what is your level of commitment, how many days can you ride? Can you put in the time to work on your fitness in general. Can this instructor help you work through these things in a step by step manner?
Nobody starts out as an ironman, nor do riders start as Grand Prix Jumper folks.... there is a method to develop mental and physical skill for all.
