Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.
How much do music teachers cost near me?
Music teachers typically cost $40 to $90 per hour for private lessons. For those who enjoy learning in groups, consider cost-effective group lessons at $20 to $50 per session. For added convenience, online lessons are available at $35 to $70 per hour.
Engage in regular lessons at a monthly cost of $150 to $400, which is the average rate for ongoing lessons booked in advance. Prices vary by the instrument type and your location.
Are music lessons worth it?
Music lessons are worth it to speed up your learning process and unleash your musical potential, regardless of your age or skill level. These private classes with a professional teacher help you express yourself through music and boost your cognitive abilities.
Many playing techniques on your instrument require feedback in-person to understand fully. Learning proper playing habits early on will help you overcome difficulties in understanding advanced playing skills later.
How often should I have music lessons?
You should have music lessons as often as you like to accomplish your personal goals, and most teachers recommend 1 to 2 weekly classes.
Follow these tips to make the fastest progress:
Practice frequently.
Memorize the lessons after each class.
Request help when you're struggling.
Set reasonable expectations with yourself by discussing your progress goals with your teacher.
How long are music lessons?
Music lessons are typically 30 to 60 minutes long to ensure you gain knowledge at a gradual pace without strain. Shorter classes are better for beginners, and you can request longer lessons later as you advance in your musical skills.
How many music lessons do I need?
The total number of music lessons you need is a personal decision you'll make with your teacher according to the level of musical proficiency you desire.
Some average timeframes for learning to play an instrument are:
Playing your first song and understanding sheet music takes 3 months to 1 year.
After 2 to 5 years, hobbyists start feeling comfortable playing in public.
Professionals who perform spend 10 to 20+ years learning their craft.

What questions do I ask before choosing a music teacher?
When talking to potential music teachers, you may want to ask:
How many years have you been teaching music?
Can you tell me about your academic qualifications in music?
What age range do you typically teach?
Do you offer a first-time discount or a free trial lesson?
Which books will I need and how much are they likely to cost?
What kind of instrument would you recommend for home practice?
How much practice would you suggest between lessons?
Will you provide some practice pieces or homework after each lesson?
What should I bring to our lessons?
Do you change your teaching methods according to the student's learning style?
What variety of music styles can you teach?
Can I get a written copy of the rules and payment methods?
What is the procedure if I need to cancel a lesson?
Can I pick some songs I'd like to learn?

We have known Dr. Sansbury for many years. When my older son was 7 years old, his piano teacher moved to another state. She recommended Dr. Sansbury to us. Now my older son is 14 years old. My younger son started his piano lesson with her when he was 5 years old and he is 9 now. She only raised the tuition one time during so many years. She can taught very advanced level piano. On the other hand, she is very patient with little kids too. My kids like her and they are very comfortable to ask questions if they have any. She also recommended different piano performance activities to them and let them choose what they like to get involved in. As a parent, I feel I may freely communicate with her about any issue.

I always thought of my singing as "okay." When I would listen to a recording of myself, I didn't think it was bad; but I also didn't think it was very good. I have no desire to be the next American Idol, but I really wanted to be able to pull out my guitar and sing around the fire or during parties and have people really enjoy it. However, because I lacked confidence in my ability, I had performance anxiety. In fact, I had never sung in front of anybody before. During my very first lesson with Michael, he had me stand in the middle of his living room and sing a song of my choosing. I was very nervous. However, once I began singing, he immediately made me feel comfortable. It got to where I would look forward to my lessons so I could sing in front of an audience!
I was astounded that during my very first lesson, he was able to identify and correct a habit of mine that I would hear in my recordings which made them sound amateurish. So, after only one lesson, I was already ahead of where I was prior to meeting with him. Eventually, Michael explained to me that I already possessed most of the skills I would need to be a good singer. He compared my voice to a "wild horse that just needs to be tamed." As I would sing for Michael, it seemed he was always able to identify the exact same spot of a song that I myself recognized that didn't sound "right." More importantly, he was able to tell me what I needed to do to remedy the issue.
I am very grateful for Michael for helping to "fine-tune" my voice and helping me with my performance anxiety. I am a better singer because of it. I cannot recommend him enough.

Keith teaches my 15 year old son. He has really learned a lot and progressed well from such an excellent teacher. Keith also connects with my son as a person in general which he really responds too.

Holly's teaching technique makes learning how to read music easier, and she introduces practice techniques at an early age which feel more like games than practice. Holly is professional and caring, and provided excellent teaching from elementary school to preparing my daughter for college entrance auditions. Now my daughter also teaches piano!
