I am a natural instructor as I have been told by many students in the past. The best they have ever had. It’s my job to find your sensibilities and talents and combine them to form a method of approach. Training eyes to form compositions which produce a young body of work to a high caliber of execution. Every piece is a masterpiece as relates to your every present moment of capability. I only paint in oils. I am a sculptor in oil clay (plastalina) and I work from there in metals either cast or fabricated. Figurative, abstract or constructive. Representational or not. Decorative or utilitarian. I enjoy showing others that any and EVERYbody is capable of being an artist... with the right amount of desire, determination and ability of following the instructor ~ atleast in the initial instructional steps before butterfly flighting off on your own inspirations, designs and desires in ART!! I Am most excited to see the confidence in creativity that others gain from my teachings, story sharing/exchanges blended with their own twist of imagination in colors of their own preference and choosing. I further enjoy seeing the numerous variations that result from choice-based ideas, practices and details that interested persons put into their wo...

Lizzie says, "Kara taught my Girl Scout Brownie troop 2 art lessons for them to earn their painting badge. The girls were all completely engaged- maybe the only meetings this year where that was the case. They learned how to paint portraits. Kara balanced teaching them technique with letting their creativity shine through. Best Brownie meetings of the year. I feel so lucky to have someone with her skills available to our kids in Greensboro. " Read more

My paintings are and have been in many (7 at the moment)highly rated galleries in the South east. I have been teaching workshops for the past 15 years. Some of these workshops have been in France. My strengths are teaching basics of oil painting ... composition, drawing, values, color, handling brushes, etc. with traditional subject matter painted in a somewhat loose manner. Some of my workshops are in co-operation with a gallery, a few are in my studio but are very limited in number of students. Please call for quickest response time....

Your Painting Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do painting classes cost?

Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.

Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.

How long are painting classes?

Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.

What kind of painting class is best for beginners?

Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.

Where can I take painting classes?

You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.

What do I bring to painting classes?

Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Easel
  • Canvas
  • Apron

  • How long have you been painting?
  • Do you allow walk-ins?
  • What type of paint would you recommend for my experience level?
  • What's your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have an age requirement?
  • How long are your classes?
  • Can I take my work home after class, or does it need to stay here to dry?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

Painting Lessons With a Classically Trained Artist

Kara was amazing with my daughter. She wanted to transform her room into a “secret garden”- basically paint a mural on the walls. I was obviously anxious, so I had the good sense to hire Kara to “help” her. Kara listened to all of my 8 year olds ideas and taught her how to draw every flower in the massive mural. Anything that seemed a little unusual, she made sure to run by me first to make sure it was ok. She bought all the paints and made it a painless experience. Her patience was incredible, as this was very detailed work and took many sessions, My daughter never got bored with it because Kara has an amazing teaching style. My daughter getting to learn one on one from Kara is a priceless experience that will be hard to top. It will no doubt be a defining part of her childhood. Her room is gorgeous- Kara made sure to perfect the (inevitable) smudges and the result is a masterpiece. Sam is so proud that she painted the room herself. Everyday when I go in it, I am stunned again by its beauty and in awe that my daughter can now paint like that. Her confidence as an artist soared after this experience. Please email me at [email protected] if you’d like to see a photo. And hire Kara - it will be a choice you will never regret.
