Brett E. says, "I have been working with Dr. Steve Fiess of High Range Piano for the last 10 months as an adult piano student, and I have been extremely satisfied with his instruction. I have been making great progress, and I’ve been improving faster than I have in the past with other teachers. Overall, Steve is a quiet, calm, all-around kind person. He is always encouraging, even when offering constructive criticism of my playing. I always look forward to my next lesson. After each lesson, I leave feeling good about my playing, and also like I received good feedback, so I know where I need to improve. Steve has been great at helping me select songs to play. As we move on to new pieces, the next one is always just the right difficulty--challenging enough to help me progress but always within reach with a little bit of work. He’s also always open to me bringing in pieces that I want to work on. I usually bring a few in, and he helps me decide which piece will be the best fit for my current skills. Steve’s depth and breadth of piano knowledge is also impressive. I often ask him questions about why a particular piece is written a particular way or some other detail about a piece. He always has a thorough answer that covers the relevant areas of music history, theory, and practice. I’ve never met another piano teacher who is so knowledgeable about the piano and piano music. It really helps to give some context to the music I’m playing and helps me understand it better. Overall, I’ve been very pleased, and I would not hesitate to recommend High Range Piano to anyone looking for a piano teacher. " Read more

Did you take lessons when you were a child? Maybe your teacher was a strict, unbending tutor and you had to spend hours practicing making it an unbearable chore. This should not be anyone's experience! Music lessons should be fun and engaging, and should include music that the student loves, challenging them based on their interests! We believe that every musician should experience progress and feel “successful” from the very beginning.

What are classical piano lessons?

Classical piano lessons teach you the traditional playing style of music written by composers like Mozart and Beethoven. You'll also learn important techniques and how to read sheet music of classical arrangements.

How long must you take piano lessons to play classical?

You must take piano lessons for 1 to 2 years with consistent practice to play simple classical pieces. Some people can make faster progress if they practice more often or have prior musical experience.

How long are classical piano lessons?

Classical piano lessons are 30 to 60 minutes long on average. The amount of time varies according to the teacher's style and the abilities of the student.

How do I find the best classical piano lessons near me?

Find classical piano lessons from private instructors by looking through the listings here on the Lessons website. Local music schools sometimes offer virtual lessons online as well.

Prior to hiring a local piano instructor, you should always:

  • Secure a minimum of 3 lesson cost estimates to get a clear comparison.
  • Read their ratings on sites such as Lessons and Google.
  • Talk to students on their references list.
  • Collect a written agreement and a lesson timeline before lessons begin.
  • Wait until after your preliminary sessions to start pre-booking for a month of lessons.

What question do I ask when choosing classical piano lessons?

When you're searching for a piano teacher, be sure to ask these questions:

  • How many years have you been teaching piano?
  • What is your formal music education background?
  • Which classical music composers are your favorites?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Do you offer a trial lesson, either for free or at a discounted rate?
  • If I don't have a piano, what type of keyboard should I get for practicing?
  • How much practice should I be doing outside of our lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and what's their cost?
  • Do you give assignments or pieces to memorize after each lesson?
  • Can you adapt your teaching style based on the individual student's needs?
  • What should I bring with me to our lessons?
  • How many different piano genres and styles can you teach?
  • Can I get a written copy of our agreement and the payment terms?
  • What is your policy for cancelling a lesson?
  • Will I be able to choose some of my own favorite songs to learn?

Valerie is a an excellent teacher who pays attention to details in teaching us to develop skills in playing the piano. She encourages us to stretch ourselves and teaches at our skill level yet has high expectations of us to work toward advancing our skills. I have enjoyed my 4 years of learning from Valerie, and I plan to keep learning and developing my piano skills. I am very happy that I found her and have her as my piano teacher. I highly recommend Valerie to both adults and children.

Charlie has been teaching acoustic guitar to my 13 year old son for 7 years. He is an excellent instructor that is very patient with beginners. My son has made great progress in these 7 years and has expanded his lessons to include piano and dobro which Charlie has supported and instructed him in also. I would recommend Charlie to instruct any beginners in guitar, piano or dobro.

My teen daughter took piano for several years with another teacher before we found Tamara. When she started studying with Tamara, I saw her get excited about piano for the first time. Tamara took the time to get to know what type of music my daughter likes and helped her understand concepts she struggled on with her previous teacher. It's such a change to see her actually looking forward to her lessons instead of dreading them!

I recommend Family Piano to everyone I know! I loved it so enthusiastically from the very beginning that I thought maybe I was just being blind about how great it really was, but then the music teacher from the high school where I teach started taking his son because of my ravings. I asked him a couple of months later whether it was just my ignorance or whether Gerry was really that good. He said, "Oh no. Gerry really IS that good." So while it's location is inconvenient to where I live, I would drive twice as far to make sure my son was taking lessons there. The methology they use is unlike any I have ever encountered. My son was learning things about transposing after just a few weeks that I did not learn until after a few years of lessons, but it was taught in a way that was appropriate to age and experience. So that after just a few lessons, my son was learning to compose some his own simple tunes using actual music theory! My son LOVES this! There are several online sources that I can access to help him from home that were created specifically for the lessons used. More than "mere music," my son is rewarded quickly for perservering when something doesn't come easily, which is a lesson we have transferred to many other incidents through the last two years. And with so many resources online, these lessons and music have given us something we both love that we can work on together--that's a pretty big gift all by itself. Thank you, Family Piano Academy!!
