Sofia B. says, "He was always very patient with me. I learned how to play the flute from him in our church band. I started when I was in highschool. I often had trouble with sight reading the notes so when I messed up it, It felt frustrating but each time I felt it was ok because of his patience and his focus on making sure I'd get the music down. He was always clear on the lessons and efficient even when I'd get distracted. I have ADHD and I'm often a very nervous person with anxiety, so I'd often get off track or very embarrassed from the frustration ...which made me mess up more. But often enough I didn't have to feel that way or when I did it went away fast because I didn't feel the need to rush my brain to accommodate or adjust to what I thought he would think of me. He made lessons engaging, fun and taught me a lot about how to play the flute and about music theory. Reading music paper and such is almost like learning a new language, but he made it entertaining and clear. Each lesson, I felt, was like our own little safe space to mess up as much as I did until I got the music right. It also didn't make me feel so nervous when I did mess up in a performance because I knew what he'd say. It helped with my confidence in performing and in my flute playing in general." Read more

I tailor my lessons to every students specific goals. I understand that not every student is looking to become a virtuoso, and so I may focus the lessons for those students more towards the specific goals of the student, with some relevant music theory sprinkled in if it seems appropriate. On the flip side, I will throw everything a student can handle at them, if they intend kn going as far as possible with their lessons, but I'll do it in a way that is manageable, and most of all, fun. Regardless of a student's particular goals, I always make it a point to ask for favorite songs and artists, and build a specific lesson plan with that info

I am a music teacher who also teaches piano, guitar, drums, mandolin, & voice plus many facets of music like songwriting, recording, and performance but my lessons and guide is to help the student build on his own strengths and to look at music from a different angle. Instead of just learning the typical scale and asking HOW do i play that, i come from the mindset of WHY you should play that. I cover areas such as MUSIC THEORY, TIMING and many other areas to help the student become the best musician he can be. I have taught many students privately and even children at the JCC CAMP in CHERRY HILL, NJ. I have been playing music sinve 1986 I enj...

Andrew L. says, "Will taught my two boys (9 & 7) with a perfect combination of patience and proper technique. They were both complete beginners a few months ago, and now they read music, play with both hands and put on little shows for the whole family. They love their lessons with “Mr. Will” and I think they’ll be playing piano for years to come. Can’t recommend him enough!" Read more

Your classical guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do classical guitar lessons cost near me?

Most classical guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for durations of 30 to 60 minutes. One-on-one lessons typically cost between $45 and $70 per hour, whereas group sessions are a more affordable option at $25 to $35 per class.

For those who prefer a digital classroom, online lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour. Monthly ongoing instruction costs $170 to $315 with a prepaid discount.

Why should I take classical guitar lessons?

You should take classical guitar lessons if you have an acoustic guitar and want to learn how to play classical concertos or Spanish-style music with fingerpicking.

Classical guitar lessons teach you how to:

  • Use nylon-string guitars and strum with the fingers instead of a pick
  • Develop your fingers to focus on complex fingerpicking techniques
  • Understand classical music theory and sight-reading

At what age should I start classical guitar lessons?

Children generally begin their classical guitar journey between the ages of 6 to 10, or as soon as they can hold the instrument well with enough hand strength to press the strings. Adults of all ages can master the instrument with the correct guidance and consistent practice.

How many classical guitar lessons do I need?

The number of weekly classical guitar lessons you need will depend on your personal goals and dedication to practice. A beginner might grasp a simple song within 2 to 6 months, but acquiring proficiency like a professional requires 4 to 10 years on average.

How do I find the best classical guitar lessons near me?

You can find proficient classical guitar tutors nearby by looking at the listings here on the Lessons platform. Sometimes teachers ara available through local music stores too.

Before hiring your tutor, always:

  • Obtain quotes from a minimum of 3 teachers and clarify what they teach.
  • Review feedback about them on Google and the Lessons site.
  • Request a reference list of their past students.
  • Ask fellow parents about their children's experiences with the tutor.
  • Secure a written agreement and schedule prior to the first session.
  • Make small initial payments to gauge the tutor's compatibility before committing to a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing a classical guitar teacher?

Ask these pertinent questions to help you pick a classical guitar teacher:

  • Did you study music formally, and what qualifications do you have?
  • How many years have you been teaching classical guitar?
  • Could I have a trial lesson to see if your teaching method works for me?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Which model of acoustic guitar should I purchase?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice is required?
  • What type of strings are best for beginners?
  • Which books should I buy for learning classical guitar?
  • Can you accommodate different learning styles?
  • What essentials should I bring to class, and how long is each session?
  • Can I have a written copy of our class schedule?
  • What is your policy for missed classes?
  • Am I allowed to suggest songs that I would like to learn?

He's a great teacher: encouraging, but also knows when and how to critique and not discourage a beginner. Makes sure it is challenging, but not overwhelming. Encyclopedic knowledge of jazz and music theory. Definitely recommend!

Will has all the attributes of a great teacher. He is knowledgeable, patient and passionate about music. I look forward to the lessons. I always feel like I’m getting better. I take guitar lessons, but Will plays about 6 instruments in total and I think his musical acumen brings and added intangible to the lessons.

I began taking guitar lessons with Thor about 5 weeks ago and he is an excellent instructor , Thor is focused on teaching me and explains and demonstrates all of the work we are doing , he is patient and enjoys passing his music skills on to me . Thor also never is in a hurry for our lesson to end , he always wants to get his lesson plan across even if it takes extra time which I really appreciate. So if you are looking for an excellent dedicated guitar instructor Thor is the right choice

Joe recently came to us to teach our twin sons, beginners and age 6.5. On his first visit he got them excited about piano and learning and was able to teach them concepts they grasped immediately. He has the gift to encourage to do well in a playful but firm way that speaks to kids. I highly recommend his teaching approach and we look forward to continuing instructions with him.

David is an amazing teacher! I've been working with him since 2019, first on electric bass, then music theory/composition/Logic and electric guitar. We've done in person and online classes, both of which have been great. He's incredibly knowledgable and patient. Anyone would be lucky to learn from him.

I have taken 3 lessons with Dylan so far and I am really enjoying them. He is very good at picking up on what level I am at and how to push me without being harsh. He makes sure I am playing correctly before moving on and gives good practice exercises. It's a lot of fun to learn with Dylan and he takes the time to really look and listen to me playing and provide feedback which is the whole point of one on one lessons. He is very knowledgeable about music and very humble. He handwrites the tabs for lessons which is totally awesome. Looking forward to keep learning from him.
