Eric B. says, "My son Tom was a first-year public school band student (saxophone) in fourth grade. I wanted to keep him playing during the summer, and Matt really came through with challenging and engaging practice sessions. Tom said it was harder than band practice, and pretty soon I found that he was opening the case and practicing on his own without any prompting from me. Matt helped him pick some music to work on, set some goals, and they consistently worked and advanced, and worked and advanced. Tom did his lessons over Zoom and it was ideal. I could hear in the tone in my son's voice that he really liked Matt and felt relaxed. And then I would hear this organized, structured practice session, and I was amazed at how Tom improved. This fall a buddy of Tom's from another school asked the Band teacher if he know my son. The Band teacher said yes he did, and that Tom was the best saxophone player in the fifth grade! I'm grateful to Matt for working with my kid, and I'm looking forward to hiring him again." Read more

Hello! I am currently studying Music Education at SUNY Fredonia and have been playing trombone for over nine years. I have strong music theory skills and experience performing in a variety of musical settings, such as Jazz, Rock, Pop, Classical, and Musical Theatre. Musical ability did not come naturally to me, which allows me to better understand the challenges many students face. Throughout my musical journey, I have overcome obstacles such as switching instruments, preparing difficult music on short notice, developing improvisation skills, and building confidence as a performer. Because of these experiences, I can relate to my students an

The son of two music teachers, I have been immersed in music, first violin, then piano, and finally trombone, since the age of 7. I fell in love with jazz, especially Dixieland, Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, through Miles Davis, JJ Johnson and beyond, when I was a teenager, but ultimately my main focus has been on Classical music for most of my career. I attended Juilliard Pre-College, Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School, where I studied with the top trombonists in the classical orchestral field, and I now perform with some of the top orchestras in New York City, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, America...

Maia S.
He's a great teacher: encouraging, but also knows when and how to critique and not discourage a beginner. Makes sure it is challenging, but not overwhelming. Encyclopedic knowledge of jazz and music theory. Definitely recommend!

I’m retired and getting back into sax after many years. Mr. Niwa’s clear explanations and patient teaching have helped me understand improvisation in a way I never did when I was younger.

I like how Matt insists on slowing everything down to really get a good understanding of notes, rythem, etc. He is a very fun person and knows a LOT about music. Matt is a super supportive instructor!

John is the total package as a trumpet instructor. It doesn’t matter what type of music you would like to learn to play, John is very versatile and can teach you to play in any genre of music. However, if you are looking to learn jazz for trumpet in particular, look no further. John has had a first-rate musical education and a lifetime of experience.
