Cooking A Cappella combines private cooking classes/events/parties with sing alongs (optional for couples/single lessons)! With a custom menu and class tailored to your specific needs, Chef Lawrence Rush will teach you how to make delicious dishes while leading your group in song...and the songs are chosen specifically for your event as well. In fact, Chef Lawrence, who is also an award winning composer and lyricist and a professional singer, can craft new lyrics for your special event, if requested. Classes can be held at your gone kitchen or at the wonderful commercial venue that can be rented. What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I make the student feel comfortable by asking where they're at with cooking, assuring them that they can easily learn any of the techniques we'll be teaching and explaining any new ingredients and terms to them before we jump in.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm mostly self taught, outside of a few basic one-time classes. I was a pastry chef for 2 NYC restaurants and worked in catering. My career has been more focused in music, but I'm obesessed with food and cooking, so I have been learning and cooking non-stop my whole adult life.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing varies, but here is a basic breakdown... for a 3 hr class for 2 in your own home, the total will come to roughly $400. A series of one on one classes will receive a discount. For a 3 hr party of 15 in your own home, the total will come to roughtly $750. For a party of 15 at the midtown venue I use, the total will come to roughly $1,300. So the more people, the less it will cost per person. The total includes all food (no beverage), instruction, songs, set-up and clean-up, the venue (if using) and all pre-event work (shopping, creating menu, etc...). I provide aprons. The maximum amount of guests we can accommodate at the venue is 18.
How did you get started teaching?
I've been teaching music for many years. It was an easy jump to start teaching cooking, since I've been cooking for so long. I wanted to join my 2 passions together!
What types of students have you worked with?
All types, from children on upward! And from completely unskilled in the kitchen to pretty well skilled.
