Richie Smyth Personal Training
About
You will find a lot of trainers that are passionate motivators, have experienced fat loss and muscle gains themselves and want to carry that over to a great career as a trainer.
Nothing wrong with that at all. I'm all those things plus two of the most important traits you will find in a top level trainer.
Experience (Both personal and client based) - Over 30 Years
Education - Masters in Science
I've achieved goals for every type of client I've ever trained. From getting competition ripped to gaining mass in all the right places to recovering from devastating injury and illness, I've done it all.
That is what 30+ years of experience and knowledge brings over many other trainers. I'm a former bodybuilding champion and record holding powerlifter as well as a black belt in several martial arts.
I've trained celebrities, athletes, models and doctors. I guide and motivate you but most importantly get you results.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We sit down and discuss goals as well as go over detailed medical history (very important). And... much like going to the doctor and dreading it, I do take a body fat analysis and determine where you are at, where you want to go and then I provide the expectations and timeframe.
I want potential clients to get a feel for who I am and how I operate and make sure we are a good fit.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
CPT-NFPT
CPR Certified
MSc. (masters)
Bodybuilder & Powerlifter
Black Belt (Multiple Disciplines), which I do utilize systems from martial arts into my training to develop speed and agility.

How did you get started teaching?
Ironically, I was a former HS science teacher, physics/astro physics and general sciences.
During the years I taught, I also was a competitive national level bodybuilder and powerlifter and had already begun at a young age to train clients at the local gyms.
I was laid off from my school district, took a job as a manager at a popular Hoboken fitness facility and personal training became full time.
What types of students have you worked with?
Every kind of student:
Actors and actresses, other bodybuilders & fitness competitors, models, athletes and doctors. Obviously, over all of the years, I've trained executives, stay at home moms and dads, all ages, genders and genetic profiles.
Many of my clients have come to me due to severe injury and/or illness, obesity and metabolic issues as well.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
There are several events with various clients but one that stands out recently is a 67 year old male that came to me 3 years ago. He had taken a bad fall from a latter and almost lost his life.
He has plastic shoulders and could barely walk or tie his shoes. His only goal was to someday bench 300 lbs.
Well, he has learned skills I trained him from my martial arts background, his strength has pushed him so far up to 350 lb bench press. He's got a life again and I'm very proud.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Depending on your situation, make sure the trainer has experience in handling any issues you may currently suffer. I gain more clients because other trainers have messed them up very badly due to lack of knowledge and experience.
More importantly, be motivated and find someone you respect and like. The mental aspect of fitness is crucial.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Know what you want. Well past the idea of "losing a few pounds".
Why do want to lose it? Feel better, more energetic or to get more dates?
It doesn't matter how foolish or vain you think the reason is, just be sure you have a very clear motivator that will carry you through the tough times.
