Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We start with the release form before a student and/or those with them can approach the horses. Next is an intensive lesson on safety. Then, we always try to get a new student on a horse during their first lesson! We just lead them at first.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Decades of study, a few degrees that apply to interacting with people in a productive way and also science, decades of experience doing and teaching everything related to horses!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Most people take advantage of the 4 lesson package for $100. They can be used for one person or divided among more then one. If a single lesson is desired, the cost is $30. Cash or check. Lessons are private or rarely semi-private (if two people wish to have a lesson together) and last at least one hour. Usually we and the student and their family/friends hang around the barn afterward and do chores and chat.
How did you get started teaching?
My mother was an elementary school teacher, and I was the oldest of six children and a sort of neighborhood Pied Piper, so I have been teaching as long as I can remember. I have also taught from a pulpit (including overseas) and Sunday School (my husband and I are ordained ministers.)
What types of students have you worked with?
Mostly girls, but also boys and adult women and men, ages 4 to 60.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Have the student and parent(s), if applicable, take an introductory lesson before committing (or get a promise of a refund for future lessons if not satisfied). Watch for the teacher's attitude. Is he/she focused on helping the student, or advancing their own ego?
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do I want to do this for the rest of my life? As a fun hobby, or more professionally? This could be anything from local casual shows to the Olympics!
